Pickleball is a relatively new sport that has been gaining popularity in the past few years. Pickleball is a racquet sport, similar to badminton, but played on a smaller court with fewer players. Pickleball was invented in 1965 by Joel Pritchard, an American physical education professor and pickle company executive, who wanted to create an outdoor game that was easy enough for his five-year-old daughter to play with her friends.
The rules of the game are simple: you must use your paddle to hit the ball over the net and into your opponent’s side of the court. You can only use one hand at a time while serving and you can’t hit it off of your opponent’s paddle or body. If you hit it off the net or out of bounds then it’s called a fault and you lose points. It’s also not allowed to hit it twice consecutively so if you make contact with the ball twice in a row then you lose your turn. The game starts with six players in two courts.
The server will lay out the ball in their court and serve it over to the first player on their left, who must return it over the net to the first player on their right. The second player then serves and so on until all six players have served one time for each pair of people. Then there is a short break before play resumes with four people in each court and a new ball being served from that point. The game ends with all six players in their respective courts, each one having served six times.
