Nothing began the general release of Nothing OS 5.0 on 12 October 2026, making the Phone (3) its first handset on Android 17. The update carries more than 80 changes, including a redesigned launcher and a new Micrographics clock face. Every other Nothing and CMF model waits until November or later.
What Nothing OS 5.0 Changes on the Phone (3)
The visible work is a redesign rather than a feature dump. Nothing has reworked its design system across typography, icons, spacing, materials and motion, and added a new typeface called Geist.
- Launcher: Redesigned, with transparent accents on system widgets and the search bar, and an adaptive colour system that samples tones from the wallpaper.
- Micrographics: A new lock-screen clock face.
- Collector widget: Lifts a subject, such as an animal or object, out of a photo from the Camera or Gallery and swaps in a different cutout each time the screen wakes.
- Glyph controls: Moved out of Settings into a dedicated app that gathers sounds, ringtones and schedules in one place, with a Glyph Timer widget.
- Essential Apps Builder: Generates and deploys widgets from a written description, without coding.
- Settings and Status Bar: Both simplified.
- Camera and Gallery: Updated icons, controls and motion in the Camera app; refined photo sorting in Gallery.
The transparent, wallpaper-tinted home screen that appeared in Nothing’s preview videos was absent from the open beta over the summer. Nothing said at the time that the redesign was still in development and would arrive with the October general release, and it is part of this build.
Which Nothing and CMF Phones Get It, and When
Only the Phone (3) has the update today. Nothing has published an indicative roadmap for the rest of its range, and it runs into next year.
| Device | Expected general release |
|---|---|
| Phone (3) | Rolling out now, from 12 October 2026 |
| Phone (3a) series and Phone (4a) series | Early November 2026 |
| Phone (2a) | Mid-November 2026 |
| Phone (3a) Lite | Late December 2026 |
| Phone (4b) and CMF Phone 2 Pro | January 2027 |
Nothing describes these as indicative dates, and the rollout is staggered by region and device, so two owners of the same model may not be offered the update on the same day. Some device trackers list slightly different months, placing the Phone (2a) and 2a Plus together in mid-November and the CMF Phone 2 Pro in mid-January 2027; where trackers and Nothing’s roadmap disagree, the roadmap is the better guide.
As of 13 October 2026, Nothing OS 5.0 is available only on the Phone (3), and only to part of its user base as the staged rollout proceeds.
How to Install Nothing OS 5.0, and the Size to Expect
There is no manual download or sideload route for the general release; it arrives over the air.
- Make sure the phone has a strong Wi-Fi connection and is charged above roughly 30%.
- Open Settings, then System, then System update.
- Tap to check for updates. If nothing appears, the staged rollout has not reached that device yet.
- Free up storage before starting. Android Authority, reading rollout screenshots shared by users, puts the package at about 2.84GB for phones coming from the previous stable release and about 1.68GB for phones already on the open beta.
Nothing has not published a download size itself, so treat those figures as reported rather than official. The warnings that circulated during the beta programme, including the possibility of needing a factory reset, applied to beta builds and not to this general release.
The Android 17 Features Underneath
Nothing OS 5.0 is a skin over Android 17, so part of what arrives comes from Google rather than Nothing.
The most useful of these is cross-platform file sharing. Google said in May 2026 that Quick Share now works with AirDrop on supported Android phones, and that any Android phone can generate a QR code to send files to an iPhone through the cloud, with nothing installed on the Apple device.
Nothing OS 5.0 also splits the notification shade: a swipe down from the left opens Notifications, and a swipe from the right opens Quick Settings. Coverage of stock Android 17 disagrees about whether that split shipped in Google’s own release or arrived later, so on a Nothing phone it is best treated as part of Nothing’s build. The update additionally brings a redesigned Recents screen and tighter privacy controls.
Four Months Behind Google’s Own Release
Google released Android 17 in stable form for supported Pixel phones on 16 June 2026. The Phone (3) is therefore reaching it almost four months later, and the cheaper models in Nothing’s range will be between five and seven months behind.
That is not unusual for a smaller manufacturer, and Nothing is ahead of several larger rivals on this cycle. It is worth knowing, though, if the reason for buying a Nothing phone was closeness to stock Android. For comparison, Samsung’s own schedule for One UI 9 ran on a similar lag, as our coverage of the One UI 9 rollout reaching the Galaxy S26 set out.
What Nothing Says Is Still Coming
Several items Nothing has discussed are not in this build. The company has pointed to MCP support for Essential Space during October, a redesigned capture experience in November, and live translation in Essential Voice later in the year. None of these has a confirmed date beyond those windows.
How Long the Phone (3) Keeps Getting Updates
The Phone (3) shipped with Nothing’s longest support commitment: five years of major Android upgrades and seven years of security patches. Nothing’s co-founder attributed the extended window to the Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 processor, saying the older Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 would have limited the phone to four years of each.
Android 17 is the second of those five major upgrades, which on the stated policy leaves three more. Nothing ships security patches every two months rather than monthly. Owners of older hardware should check where their model sits in the support window, much as Pixel 6 owners reached the end of theirs this month.
