Pixel 6 end of support arrives this month, five years after the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro went on sale in the United States on 28 October 2021. The October 2026 security patch, released on 6 October, is expected to be their last. Google has published no specific final-patch date.

What Google Has Actually Said

Google has confirmed that the two phones are reaching end of life, but it has never named the date of their last patch. The clearest statement came on 20 July 2026, when Google released Android 17 QPR2 Beta 1, build CP41.260701.005, to the Pixel 6a and newer models only. The Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro were excluded on the grounds that they would reach end of life before the stable release, which is expected in December 2026, and the earlier QPR1 beta series was their last.

What Google has not done is publish a cut-off date. Its support page frames the commitment as a length of time rather than a calendar date, promising “5 years of OS and security updates” for the Pixel 6, 6 Pro, 6a, Pixel 7 and Pixel Fold, counted from when each device first became available on the Google Store in the United States. For the Pixel 6, that clock started on 28 October 2021.

That leaves one loose end. Android Authority has reported that a November bulletin would land after the cut-off, which would mean the October patch is the last the Pixel 6 actually receives rather than the last it was entitled to. No other outlet has confirmed that, and Google has not addressed it.

Which Pixels Lose Support, and Which Do Not

Only the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro reach the end of their window this month. The Pixel 6a, despite the shared name, has another nine months.

ModelUS release dateSupport window endsLength
Pixel 6 and 6 Pro28 October 2021October 20265 years
Pixel 6a28 July 2022July 20275 years
Pixel 7 and 7 Pro13 October 2022October 20275 years
Pixel 8 and 8 Pro4 October 2023October 20307 years

The five-year figure for the Pixel 6 and 7 generations is itself an extension. When the Pixel 6 launched, Google promised three years of Android version upgrades and five years of security patches. On 5 December 2024 it quietly amended its support page to give the Pixel 6 series, the Pixel 7 series and the Pixel Fold five years of operating system updates as well. The Pixel Tablet was left out of that change and keeps the original three-and-five split.

Every Pixel from the Pixel 8 onwards carries a seven-year commitment, which is why the Pixel 9 generation and later sit so far out. Pixels up to and including the Pixel 5a already receive neither Android version updates nor security updates.

What the October 2026 Pixel Update Contains

The October patch is a routine monthly release rather than a farewell build. It reached all supported Pixel devices running Android 17, from the Pixel 6 series to the Pixel 11 line, in a phased rollout over roughly a week from 6 October.

  • Security: 28 vulnerabilities addressed in the Android security bulletin, plus six further Pixel-specific fixes.
  • Virtual keyboard: a fix for an issue affecting the keyboard in search fields.
  • Audio: a fix for ringtone distortion during some voice-over-IP calls.
  • Camera roll: a fix for some photos and videos displaying in the wrong orientation.

Separately, Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 went out to 23 Pixel models on 5 October. The Pixel 6 and 6 Pro are not among them.

How to Check Where Your Pixel Stands

  1. Open Settings: scroll to the bottom and tap About phone.
  2. Read the Android version entry: tap it to expand the detail.
  3. Check the Android security update line: it shows the month of the patch your phone is running. A Pixel 6 that is current will read October 2026.
  4. Check for an update manually: go to Settings, then System, then Software updates, and tap System update. Because the rollout is phased, a phone can be a few days behind.

What Changes for Pixel 6 Owners

Nothing stops working. A Pixel 6 that reaches end of support keeps booting, keeps making calls and keeps running the apps already on it. The phone is frozen at its final Android 17 build.

What ends is the stream of fixes. Newly discovered vulnerabilities in Android will be patched on supported Pixels and not on the Pixel 6, and the gap widens every month that passes. Google Play system updates and app updates from the Play Store continue separately and are not governed by the device’s update window, so apps will keep receiving their own fixes for some time. Feature drops and Android version upgrades stop.

As of 12 October 2026, Google has not announced a paid extended-security option for the Pixel 6, has not published a final-patch date, and has not said whether a November bulletin will include the device.

What Pixel 6 Owners Can Do Now

The decision turns on how the phone is used rather than on the date itself.

  • Install the October patch first: whatever you decide next, the final build is the most secure state the phone will ever be in.
  • Reduce what the phone holds: moving banking and primary email to a supported device limits what an unpatched browser engine can reach.
  • Treat the browser as the main risk: most practical attacks on an unpatched phone arrive through web content, so keeping Chrome updated from the Play Store matters more than it did.
  • Consider a custom Android build only with care: community builds can extend patching on a Pixel 6, but they require unlocking the bootloader and carry their own trade-offs.
  • Check the trade-in value before it falls: end-of-support announcements tend to move resale prices downward.

Frequently Asked Questions

When Is the Pixel 6 End of Support Date?

October 2026, five years after the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro reached the Google Store in the United States on 28 October 2021. Google has not published a specific final-patch date within that month.

Was the October 2026 Patch the Pixel 6’s Last Update?

It is expected to be, and Google has excluded the Pixel 6 from the Android 17 QPR2 beta on end-of-life grounds. Google has not confirmed it as the final update.

Does the Pixel 6a Lose Support Too?

No. The Pixel 6a was released on 28 July 2022 and its five-year window runs to July 2027. The Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are supported until October 2027.

Will My Pixel 6 Stop Working?

No. The phone keeps working and keeps running its apps. It stays on its final Android 17 build and stops receiving security patches and Android version upgrades from Google.

Will Apps Still Update on a Pixel 6?

Yes. App updates from the Play Store and Google Play system updates are delivered separately from the device’s update window, so they continue after support for the device itself ends.
