Amazon renamed Kindle Unlimited as Kindle Plus, styled Kindle+, on 22 October 2026 and added audiobooks to the subscription at no extra cost. Kindle Plus audiobooks are available to subscribers in the United States only at launch. The monthly price is unchanged at $11.99 in the United States and £9.49 in the United Kingdom.
Where Kindle Plus Audiobooks Are Available
The rename travelled worldwide; the audio catalogue did not. Kindle Plus replaces Kindle Unlimited everywhere the subscription is sold, including the United Kingdom, India and the rest of Amazon’s Kindle markets, but the listening benefit that gives the rebrand its purpose is confined to the United States marketplace.
| Market | Monthly price | Audiobooks included |
|---|---|---|
| United States | $11.99 | Yes, thousands of titles |
| United Kingdom | £9.49 | No, ebooks and magazines only |
| Other Kindle markets, including India | Varies by country | No, ebooks and magazines only |
Amazon has said it intends to bring audiobooks to more marketplaces over time. It has not named a single country or given a date, so subscribers outside the United States have no scheduled point at which their subscription changes. Readers in those markets still need a separate Audible subscription to listen to audiobooks from Amazon.
What Changes for Existing Subscribers
Nothing needs to be done. The switch was automatic, and the terms that matter to a reader carried over intact.
- Price: unchanged in every market, with no increase announced alongside the rename.
- Borrow limit: still up to 20 titles at a time, counting ebooks, audiobooks and comics together, with no due dates and no late returns.
- Library and settings: reading history, bookmarks, notes and account settings transferred without interruption.
- Devices: Kindle e-readers, the free Kindle apps for phone, tablet and computer, and the web reader all continue to work.
The visible difference is the name and badge. Amazon has issued a new Kindle+ badge that replaces the Kindle Unlimited marking on qualifying book listings. This is the second Amazon brand retired in October 2026, after the company replaced the Fire tablet line with Alexa Tablets earlier in the month.
How to Tell an AI Narrator From a Human One
Check the narrator field on the book’s product page before borrowing. Much of the new audio catalogue was generated by Virtual Voice, Amazon’s free synthetic-narration tool for self-publishing authors, rather than recorded by a person.
- Open the title’s product page in the Kindle store or Kindle app.
- Read the “Narrator” line in the product details. A person’s name means a human recording; the words “Virtual Voice” mean the audio was computer-generated.
- Look for the note stating that the title uses virtual voice narration, which Amazon places on qualifying listings.
- Play the sample. Virtual Voice titles carry a “Virtual voice sample” button, and Amazon says that “customers can listen to samples before purchasing.”
Amazon’s own documentation states that audiobooks created by virtual voice “are clearly labeled”. The same page confirms the feature launched in beta in the United States marketplace, which is consistent with the geographic limit on the new Kindle+ audio catalogue. There is no store-wide filter to hide synthetic narration, so the check has to be made title by title.
What Kindle Plus Still Does Not Include
The subscription remains a narrower product than the branding suggests. Three limits survive the rename.
- Amazon Prime: Kindle+ is a separate paid subscription and is not bundled with a Prime membership.
- The Audible catalogue: the included audiobooks are a subset drawn from self-published and eligible programme titles, not Audible’s full library, and Audible remains a separate service.
- Royalty Share titles: audiobooks produced under Audible’s Royalty Share and Royalty Share Plus terms are not eligible at launch, according to Written Word Media’s reading of the programme rules, which leaves gaps in the catalogue.
How Authors Get Paid for Listening
Listening is paid per page from the same pool that already pays for reading. Amazon pays authors enrolled in KDP Select out of a monthly Global Fund, and it says it is adding money to that fund to cover audiobook listening.
Two eligibility routes exist. Virtual Voice audiobooks are included automatically when the matching ebook is enrolled in KDP Select. Audiobooks made through Audible’s Audiobook Creation Exchange qualify only if the ebook is in KDP Select, distribution is exclusive to Audible, Whispersync is enabled and the title uses Pay for Production terms. Amazon notes on its own help pages that “ACX is open to residents of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, and Ireland”, so the production route itself is limited by nationality before the marketplace limit applies.
A page pays once per subscriber, so a reader who both reads and listens to the same book does not generate two payments; Written Word Media reports that the higher applicable rate applies in that case. Amazon has not published the per-page listening rate or the size of the funding increase.
What Amazon Has Not Announced
As of 24 October 2026, Kindle+ audiobooks are live for United States subscribers only, the price is unchanged in every market, and Amazon has given no date or country list for expanding the audio catalogue.
Several things remain unstated. Amazon has not said how much it is adding to the Global Fund, what a page listened pays compared with a page read, whether ebook per-page rates will hold once listening draws on the same pool, or whether enrolling an audiobook creates any new exclusivity obligation beyond the existing ACX terms. Author trade press has flagged all four as open questions. Readers outside the United States should treat the audiobook benefit as unavailable rather than imminent until Amazon names a market.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Kindle Plus More Expensive Than Kindle Unlimited?
No. The price held at $11.99 a month in the United States and £9.49 a month in the United Kingdom, and Amazon announced no increase alongside the rename.
Can I Listen to Kindle Plus Audiobooks Outside the United States?
Not at launch. The audio catalogue is limited to the United States marketplace, and Amazon has not named the next countries or given a timeline.
Do I Need to Resubscribe or Change Anything?
No. Existing memberships converted automatically, and borrowing limits, library contents, notes and account settings carried across unchanged.
Are the Kindle Plus Audiobooks Read by Real People?
Some are and some are not. Human-narrated titles from Audible’s production programme sit alongside audiobooks generated by Amazon’s Virtual Voice tool, and the narrator field on each product page identifies which is which.
Does Kindle Plus Replace an Audible Subscription?
No. The included audiobooks are a subset of eligible titles rather than Audible’s full catalogue, and Audible remains a separate paid service.
