Amazon Alexa Tablets have replaced the company’s Fire tablet line. The Alexa Tablet 8 starts at $229.99, the Alexa Tablet 11 at $329.99 and the Alexa Tablet 12 Pro at $499.99, shipping 14 October in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Amazon says it has stopped making new Fire tablets.
What the Three Alexa Tablets Cost
The cheapest Amazon Alexa Tablet is $229.99 and the most expensive configuration reported so far is $680. Amazon, the Seattle retailer that has sold Fire-branded tablets since 2011, listed the three base models and two accessories in its announcement of 8 October 2026, written by Kevin Keith, its Vice President of Devices.
| Model | Screen | RAM and storage | Starting price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alexa Tablet 8 | 8.7-inch | 4GB / 64GB | $229.99 |
| Alexa Tablet 11 | 11-inch 2.5K, 90Hz | 8GB / 64GB | $329.99 |
| Alexa Tablet 12 Pro | 12-inch, 120Hz | 8GB / 128GB | $499.99 |
| Alexa Tablet 12 Pro (Nanomatte) | 12-inch anti-glare, 120Hz | 8GB / 128GB | $549.99 |
Those are entry prices, and three charges sit on top of them. Moving the Alexa Tablet 8 or the Alexa Tablet 11 from 64GB to 128GB of storage adds about $50, according to price lists published by 9to5Google and GSMArena. Removing lockscreen advertisements from those two models costs a further $20; the 12 Pro carries no lockscreen ads.
- Alexa Tablet Pro Keyboard: $149.99, and it works only with the 12 Pro.
- Alexa Tablet Pro Pen: $89.99, also 12 Pro only, described by GSMArena as a USI 2.0 stylus with 4,096 pressure levels.
- Top configuration: 9to5Google and GSMArena both list a 16GB / 256GB Nanomatte 12 Pro at $680, a tier Amazon’s own announcement does not price.
Amazon says the 12 Pro delivers “nearly three times faster processing and nine times faster graphics” than any tablet the company has shipped before. The comparison is against Amazon’s own older tablets, not against an iPad or a Samsung Galaxy Tab. Amazon describes the 12 Pro’s chip only as a 4nm eight-core processor; GSMArena, Droid Life and 9to5Google all identify it as a MediaTek Dimensity 8400, with the cheaper two models using a MediaTek MT8189.
Google Play Replaces the Amazon Appstore
The biggest functional change is that these are the first Amazon tablets with full Google Play Store access. Fire tablets ran Fire OS and were limited to the Amazon Appstore, which never carried YouTube, Gmail or most Google apps. Amazon’s announcement names YouTube, Netflix, Gmail and Google Docs among the apps now available.
Amazon apps stay preinstalled, including Prime Video, Kindle, Audible, Amazon Music, Amazon Quick and Amazon Luna. Engadget, which was briefed before the announcement, reports the tablets run Android 16 under a custom Amazon launcher; Amazon’s own announcement says only that they run Android and does not name a version.
Two practical limits have been reported rather than confirmed by Amazon. Engadget and Notebookcheck both say the tablets have no microSD card slot, which Fire tablets offered, so the storage tier chosen at purchase is permanent. Amazon has also published no statement on how many years of Android version upgrades or security patches the new tablets will receive.
What Alexa+ Can See on Your Screen
Alexa+ is built into all three tablets and one of its features reads the screen, but only if the owner turns it on. Amazon calls that feature On-Screen Intelligence, and says it is off by default, requires an explicit opt-in, and displays a visual indicator whenever it is active.
With it enabled, a user looking at a list of walking routes can ask Alexa+ which is the best fit, and the assistant answers from what is displayed. Amazon also describes Live sessions, a hands-free mode that keeps a conversation open so the wake word does not have to be repeated between questions, and a Dynamic Tab on the home screen that changes with use.
What Happens to the Fire Tablet You Already Own
Existing Fire tablets keep working and keep receiving security updates, but Amazon has not published a date on which that ends. Amazon told CNBC that it will support the Fire lineup for four years after the final shipment, that owners can carry on using their devices as they do today, and that it is no longer manufacturing new units. An Amazon spokesperson told Business Insider that “Fire tablets remain their own product — fully supported, with continued security updates”.
The four-year figure cannot currently be turned into a date. It runs from the final shipment of Fire hardware, and Amazon has not said when that will be. The company has said it will sell through its remaining Fire inventory, so the clock has not started in public. One report says the withdrawal covers the whole line including the Fire Kids editions, which Amazon has not separately confirmed.
Notably, Amazon’s own announcement of the Alexa Tablets does not mention Fire tablets or Fire OS at all. Everything known about the discontinuation comes from statements the company gave to reporters on the day. Owners of other hardware have seen how quickly a support decision can change a device: Belkin’s shutdown of the Wemo cloud service in January 2026 removed app and voice control from smart-home gear that still worked physically.
- Your tablet still works: Amazon has announced no shutdown of Fire OS services, apps or the Amazon Appstore.
- Security updates continue: Amazon has committed to four years from the last Fire shipment.
- No end date exists yet: because the final shipment date is unpublished, no owner can calculate when updates stop.
- Buying one now is still possible: Amazon is selling remaining stock rather than pulling listings.
Where and When the Tablets Ship
Orders opened on announcement day and shipping is staggered across two dates. As of 9 October 2026, all three Alexa Tablets are on sale and ship on 14 October in the United States, Mexico and Canada, and on 19 October in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain. Amazon has named no other countries and no date for them.
- 14 October 2026: United States, Mexico and Canada, for all three Alexa Tablets and the Amazon Kids Tablets.
- 19 October 2026: United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy and Spain.
- Japan: the Amazon Kids Tablets ship on 14 October, but Amazon does not list the standard Alexa Tablets for Japan.
Sales run through Amazon’s own store and selected retail partners, which Amazon names as including Best Buy and Target. The Amazon Kids Tablets come in 8.7-inch and 11-inch sizes and bundle a protective case and a year of Amazon Kids+; Amazon’s announcement does not price them.
What Amazon Has Not Said
Several details a buyer would reasonably want are still missing. These are gaps in Amazon’s published material as of 9 October 2026, not disputed claims.
- Update commitment: no stated number of years of Android upgrades or security patches for the new Alexa Tablets.
- Final Fire shipment: no date, which leaves the four-year Fire support promise open-ended.
- Android version: Amazon has not named it; Engadget reports Android 16.
- Kids Tablet pricing: absent from Amazon’s announcement, though HowToGeek reports $230 for the 8.7-inch and $330 for the 11-inch.
- Wider availability: no plans announced for India, Japan, Australia or any market beyond the eight named.
On price, CNBC reported that Amazon’s previous base tablet was the $155 Fire HD 10, which makes $229.99 a meaningful step up for the cheapest model in the range. CNBC also reported that Amazon raised prices on Echo, Kindle and Fire TV hardware in August 2026 citing the memory shortage, and that Amazon disputed a link between component costs and the new tablet pricing. Figures that older Fire models listed for vary between retail trackers, so no reliable like-for-like price table can be published yet.
