Apple says an iPhone 18 Pro Max showing No Service on AT&T cannot be restored by a software update and must be replaced. It released iOS 27.0.1 and an AT&T carrier settings update on 2 October 2026 to prevent further cases. No other iPhone model or carrier is affected.
iPhone 18 Pro Max No Service: One Model, One Carrier, One Country
The iPhone 18 Pro Max no service problem is confined to one model, one carrier and one country. Apple, the Cupertino company that makes the iPhone, said it has observed the fault only on iPhone 18 Pro Max handsets using the network of AT&T, the Dallas-based US carrier. Affected phones cannot place calls, send texts or use mobile data.
Teardowns published on 19 September 2026 by 9to5Mac, AppleInsider and iClarified found that the US iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only new iPhone of this generation carrying a Qualcomm modem, the Snapdragon X80, rather than Apple’s own C2.
| Device | Cellular modem | Fault reported? |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 Pro Max, United States | Qualcomm Snapdragon X80 | Yes, on AT&T |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max, other countries | Apple C2 | Not reported |
| iPhone 18 Pro, all countries | Apple C2 | Not reported |
| iPhone Duo, all countries | Apple C2 | Not reported |
Complaints began in mid-September 2026 on the Apple Support Community, the MacRumors forums and Reddit, roughly a week before Apple commented. This is the third fault reported on the iPhone 18 Pro line since launch, after a Face ID bug and speaker crackling.
What Apple Released, and What It Does Not Do
The two updates are preventive, not corrective. In a statement given to MacRumors on 2 October 2026, Apple said:
“We have identified an issue affecting a small number of iPhone 18 Pro Max users on the AT&T network that may cause a device to lose service and be unable to make calls. We released iOS 27.0.1 earlier this week and strongly encourage all iPhone 18 Pro Max users to update now, and are also issuing a carrier settings update today. These updates together are meant to help prevent this issue from occurring.”
The operative word is “prevent”. Apple told reporters separately that a handset which has already lost service will not come back with a software update, which is why replacement is the remedy. iOS 27.0.1 shipped in the same week as iOS 26.7.1, and is a general release for all iPhone 18 Pro Max owners rather than a targeted repair.
As of 5 October 2026, the 2 October statement remains Apple’s only public comment on the fault.
How to Install the Carrier Settings Update Without Waiting
The AT&T carrier settings update downloads on its own within 14 days of 2 October 2026, but it can be pulled immediately. Apple’s documentation for manually updating carrier settings gives the steps, and says installation “takes less than one minute, and you can keep using your device”.
- Update to iOS 27.0.1 first, in Settings, then General, then Software Update.
- Keep the iPhone connected to Wi-Fi or a cellular network.
- Open Settings, tap General, then tap About.
- Wait a few seconds on that screen, then follow the prompt to install the carrier update if one appears.
- To see which version is installed, read the number next to Carrier on the same About screen.
What to Do When Service Is Already Gone
Apple named four routes for a replacement, and no self-service option. Owners whose handsets have lost AT&T service are told to contact Apple Support, visit an Apple Store, contact AT&T, or visit an AT&T store.
Apple did not say whether the replacement is free of charge, how long it takes, or whether replacement units come from existing stock. None of those points has been addressed publicly.
Why the Modem Difference Is Not Yet an Explanation
Apple has not named a cause, and the modem split is context rather than a finding. The teardown evidence establishes that the affected configuration is also the only one in the line-up using Qualcomm silicon in the United States, and Apple’s US technical specifications page leaves the modem entry blank for the Pro Max while listing the C2 for the iPhone 18 Pro.
That is a correlation drawn by reporters, not a diagnosis from Apple or AT&T. Neither company has said whether the fault sits in the modem, in the carrier provisioning of an eSIM, or elsewhere.
What Remains Unknown
- The number of devices: Apple says a “small number” and has published no figure.
- The cause: neither Apple nor AT&T has identified it.
- The cost of a replacement: Apple’s statement does not mention price.
- Whether newly bought units are safe: Apple has not said whether handsets now on sale are unaffected.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does iOS 27.0.1 Fix iPhone 18 Pro Max No Service on AT&T?
No. Apple says iOS 27.0.1 and the carrier settings update are meant to help prevent the fault. A handset that has already lost service needs replacing.
Which iPhone Models Are Affected?
Only the iPhone 18 Pro Max on AT&T in the United States. Apple says it has not observed the fault on any other iPhone model or any other carrier.
How Do I Get the AT&T Carrier Settings Update Straight Away?
Connect to Wi-Fi or mobile data, then open Settings, tap General and tap About. If an update is waiting, a prompt appears and installs in under a minute.
Will Apple Replace the iPhone Free of Charge?
Apple has not said. Its statement sets out where to go for a replacement but does not address cost.
Are iPhone 18 Pro Max Units Outside the United States Affected?
No reports involve them. Those handsets use Apple’s own C2 modem, while the US model uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80, according to September 2026 teardowns.
