Google is cutting the Gemini app’s free tier to a single model. From 9 October 2026, users without a Google AI subscription keep Flash-Lite and lose Flash and Pro. The new Gemini model limits also strip Pro from AI Plus, on a date each subscriber gets by email.

What Changes on 9 October

Free Gemini users drop from three selectable models to one. Google, the Mountain View company that makes the Gemini assistant, is tying model choice to the paid Google AI tiers rather than to usage allowances, so the model picker in the app will show fewer options depending on what the account pays for.

TierPrice a month (US)Models after the changeDeep Think
No subscription$0Flash-Lite onlyNo
Google AI Plus$4.99Flash-Lite, FlashNo
Google AI Pro$19.99Flash-Lite, Flash, ProYes, newly added
Google AI Ultra$99.99 to $199.99Flash-Lite, Flash, ProYes

Flash-Lite is the cheapest and fastest of the three, described on Google’s own support pages as the “efficient workhorse model designed for speed”. Flash sits in the middle, and Pro is the one Google calls its most advanced for complex maths and coding. Google’s subscription pages identify that top model as Gemini 3.1 Pro.

As of 5 October 2026, the change has not been posted to Gemini’s public release-notes page, where the newest entry is dated 30 September 2026 and covers the migration of Gems to Skills. The tier details come from in-app and email notices, first reported by the Google-focused outlet 9to5Google on 3 October 2026.

Why AI Plus Subscribers Have No Fixed Date

AI Plus loses Pro later than the free tier, and Google is setting the date per account. According to 9to5Google’s report, AI Plus subscribers “will receive an email that explains when these changes will take effect” — which means the 9 October date circulating in coverage does not apply to them.

Practically, that leaves AI Plus subscribers with two things to check: the notification email in the account’s inbox, and the model picker itself, which is where the option disappears when the change lands. Google has published no window for how long the AI Plus rollout takes.

Deep Think Moves Down to Google AI Pro

The one gain in this reshuffle goes to AI Pro, which adds Deep Think. Deep Think is Gemini’s maximum-reasoning mode, which works through a problem in parallel before answering, and until now it sat on the top tier only: Google’s AI plans page lists “Deep Think reasoning mode” under Google AI Ultra alongside its up-to-20x Gemini allowance.

AI Ultra keeps a larger overall allowance, so a Pro subscriber and an Ultra subscriber now reach the same mode with different amounts of room to use it.

Model Access and Usage Limits Are Two Separate Systems

Losing a model is not the same as running out of quota, and the two have different consequences. Gemini already throttles heavy users by allowance, and Google’s support page for the app states that “if you have a Google AI subscription plan and hit your limit, you can continue chats with Flash-Lite” — so Flash-Lite is both the free tier’s only model and every paying tier’s fallback.

That matters for the 9 October change in one specific way: a quota that refills does not give a free account Flash or Pro back, because those are now gated by plan rather than by remaining allowance. Outlets covering the change report that Gemini’s allowances have been counted in compute since May 2026, on a window that resets every five hours with a weekly cap; Google describes limits on its support pages without publishing those figures.

What Google Has Not Said

Three questions are still open as of 5 October 2026.

  • Where Gemini 4 Argon lands: Google has not said whether its newest frontier model, released to 650 vetted security partners on 30 September 2026, will be sold inside the Pro tier or above it.
  • When effort levels arrive: low, medium and high effort settings for each model are due in the Gemini app during October 2026, with higher settings consuming more of the user’s allowance. No separate rollout date has been given.
  • Whether Flash returns to the free tier: Google has not described the change as temporary, and has not said it is permanent either.

The free tier is not being withdrawn. The Gemini app itself remains free to download and use, including the Windows desktop app released on 10 September 2026, which does not require a paid plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Happens to Free Gemini Users on 9 October 2026?

Accounts without a Google AI subscription keep only Flash-Lite in the Gemini app. Flash and Pro stop appearing as choices in the model picker.

Do Google AI Plus Subscribers Lose Pro on 9 October?

No. AI Plus keeps Flash-Lite and Flash and loses Pro on a date set per account, which Google is sending by email, according to 9to5Google’s report of the notices.

Does Google AI Pro Now Include Deep Think?

Yes. Deep Think, previously listed only under Google AI Ultra, is being added for AI Pro subscribers at $19.99 a month. Ultra retains the larger overall usage allowance.

Will the Gemini Model Limits Change How Much I Can Use the App?

Not directly. The limits announced here govern which models an account may select, not how many messages it may send. Usage allowances are counted separately.

What Does a Free User Lose in Practice?

The ability to switch to Gemini’s mid-tier and advanced models for harder prompts. Google positions Flash-Lite for speed on everyday tasks and Pro for complex maths and coding.
