Google is retiring Gemini Gems and replacing them with Skills. An in-app notice says Gems stop accepting new edits on 13 October 2026 and migrate automatically to Skills on 17 November 2026. Skills currently requires a Google AI Pro or AI Ultra subscription, which Gems never did.
What Changes on Each Date
There are two deadlines, five weeks apart, and only the first one takes something away. Gems are saved custom versions of Gemini: a set of standing instructions, and optionally reference files, that you reuse instead of retyping a prompt.

The wording comes from Google’s own notice, which 9to5Google reported is now appearing in the Gemini app and reads in part: “Gems will become skills starting Nov 17, 2026.” Android Authority, which found the fuller string, reported it as: “Your Gems will become skills on Nov 17, 2026. Starting Oct 13, 2026, you won’t be able to create or edit Gems. You can use your Gems until Nov 17, 2026.”
What Skills Are, and How They Work Differently
Skills are the same idea moved inside Gemini Spark, Google’s task-automation layer in the Gemini app. A Skill is a reusable instruction set with saved context, and you trigger it by typing a forward slash in the chat box rather than picking it from a side panel, with more than one usable in a single conversation.
The practical difference is not how they are written but who is allowed to write them. Google’s help page on Gemini Spark says access rolled out on 16 July 2026 to Google AI Pro subscribers in the United States and to Google AI Ultra subscribers.

The plan column is not a reading of press coverage. Google’s own help page on Gemini Apps plan limits lists Gems as available on every tier including no paid plan, and lists Gemini Spark as available only with Google AI Pro and Google AI Ultra.
Who Could Lose Access
Two groups are exposed: people on the free tier or Google AI Plus, and people outside the countries where Spark has launched. Google’s Spark help page lists the feature as unavailable in the European Economic Area, Nigeria, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, and it launched in stages elsewhere through mid-2026.
That means a Gemini user in London or Dublin who built Gems this year is being moved on 17 November to a feature their region cannot currently open. Google has not said what happens in that case, and the reverse has happened before at Google, so the outcome is not a foregone conclusion: the Gemini app for Windows shipped free while Spark stayed behind a paid plan, keeping the two on separate tracks.
What to Do Before 13 October
The one irreversible step is the editing lock, so anything you would want to change or record should be handled in the next fifteen days.
- Copy the instruction text out of every Gem you rely on. Paste it into a document. This is the part you cannot rebuild from memory, and after 13 October you cannot edit it in place.
- Note which files each Gem has attached, and keep your own copies. Google has not said whether attached reference files carry across.
- Make the edits you have been putting off now, including deleting Gems you no longer want migrated.
- Record any share links you have circulated to colleagues or family, so you can tell where a broken link came from later.
- Check which plan your account is on before 17 November, since that is what decides whether the replacement opens for you at all.
None of this requires a subscription decision today. It only protects the content, which is the part Google’s notice does not promise to preserve in detail.
Where Things Stand as of 28 September 2026
As of 28 September 2026, the two dates are the only firm facts, and they reached users through an in-app notice rather than a blog post or a published help-centre article. 9to5Google reported that the support link inside the notice, pointing at a gems-to-skills page, was not yet live when it published on 27 September. Google’s plan-limits help page still does not mention Skills at all.
Four things are unresolved. Google has not said whether Skills will open to free-tier users after the migration; whether a Gem’s attached files, default tool or share link transfer; what happens to accounts in regions where Spark has not launched; or whether work and school accounts are covered. Coverage from 9to5Google, Android Authority, AndroidPure and tbreak all stops at the same wall on the free-tier question, because the notice itself does not answer it.
One precedent is worth keeping in view: Google has retired a free assistant into Gemini before, when Google Assistant was replaced by Gemini, and that transition also arrived through user notices ahead of a full explanation.
