Apple is giving dating apps and romantic AI companions a minimum 18+ rating on the App Store. Two new content descriptors, Dating and Relationships and Shared Location, reach App Store Connect on 16 November 2026. The Apple 18+ dating apps policy was announced on 2 November, with declarations due by 12 January 2027.

What Apple Added to the Age Rating Questionnaire

Apple added two questions that developers must answer about their own apps. The announcement, titled “Upcoming: New age rating content descriptors in App Store Connect”, was posted to Apple’s developer news page on 2 November 2026.

Every app on the App Store carries an age rating, which Apple assigns from a questionnaire the developer fills in. The two new descriptors are not treated the same way.

DescriptorApple’s definitionEffect on the age rating
Dating and Relationships“Features that enable dating or relationship connections between real people and/or a virtual companion that engages a user in sexual or romantic content.”Minimum rating of 18+
Shared Location“Sharing of real-world location with another person or group.”“May not have an impact on their minimum age rating in some regions”

The wording that does the work is short. Apple’s developer announcement states that “apps that include Dating and Relationships receive a minimum age rating of 18+”. There is no sliding scale and no exemption for apps where romance is a side feature.

Apple’s rating tiers are 4+, 9+, 13+, 16+ and 18+, following an overhaul the company completed in 2025 that removed the old 12+ and 17+ bands. An app sitting at 13+ or 16+ today that declares dating or romantic companion features moves to 18+.

The Two Dates Developers Have to Meet

There are two deadlines, and they do different jobs.

  • 16 November 2026: The two descriptors appear in the App Store Connect questionnaire. From this date, developers must answer them when they submit an app update or change their age rating answers.
  • 12 January 2027: Every app on the App Store must have both declarations completed, whether or not it has shipped an update in the meantime.

As of 4 November 2026, the descriptors are not yet live in App Store Connect and no app’s rating has changed because of this policy. Apple has published the rule and the dates, and nothing more: the company has not said what it will do to apps that reach 12 January 2027 without the declarations filled in.

Apple 18+ Dating Apps Rule: What Actually Changes

For most people, nothing changes on 16 November. The rule changes a label in a store listing, not the software on a phone.

An age rating decides how the App Store classifies and surfaces an app. It is not an identity check. Apple is asking developers to declare a feature, and Apple then applies the rating; no user is asked to prove anything as a result of that rating alone.

Where the rating does bite is parental controls. When a parent sets an age limit through Screen Time or Family Sharing, apps rated above that limit stop appearing in the store. Apple said when it expanded these tools in June 2025 that apps whose ratings exceed the restrictions in place will not appear on the App Store, including in the Today, Games and Apps tabs and in editorial stories. A dating app or AI companion that moves from 16+ to 18+ therefore disappears from the store for a managed teenage account that was previously allowed to see it.

Two things follow that are easy to miss. A teenager with no parental restrictions set on their device is not blocked by an 18+ rating in most of the world. And Apple has said nothing about apps already installed on a phone before the rating changes.

Where an 18+ Rating Actually Blocks a Download

In three countries, an 18+ rating stops a download outright. Since 24 February 2026, the App Store in Australia, Brazil and Singapore has required users to be confirmed as adults before they can download an app rated 18+, and a failed confirmation blocks the download. Apple performs that check itself in those markets.

Elsewhere, the picture depends on local law rather than on the rating. Apple’s Declared Age Range API passes a user’s age category to developers who ask for it, and the company switched that on for new Apple Account holders in Utah from 6 May 2026 and in Louisiana from 1 July 2026, alongside the Texas app store law already in force. In those states the obligation to check age sits partly with the developer, not only with Apple.

Brazil is handled separately again in Apple’s notice. Local rules there require an A16 rating for Shared Location and an A18 rating for Dating and Relationships. Apple points developers who think they deserve a lower rating, giving the example of location sharing built for parents and children, to Brazil’s Ministry of Justice and Public Security, which can issue an official rating that then displays on the Brazilian App Store.

Why AI Companion Apps Are the Real Target

Mainstream dating services already bar under-18s, so the rule lands hardest on AI companion apps. Tinder has excluded minors since 2016, and its rivals follow the same policy, which means an 18+ store rating mostly formalises what those apps already enforce at sign-up. The large dating apps have faced plenty of other scrutiny, including a class action over addictive design brought against Tinder, Hinge and Bumble, but age has not been the sticking point.

AI companion apps are a different case, because many of them are rated for children. Research published by Deepsee, a company that analyses app store data, reviewed 4,346 AI character and companion apps across both stores and found that 2,589 of them, or 60%, carried a rating that classifies them as accessible to minors. On the App Store side, Deepsee’s published figures put 1,058 listings at a 4+ rating. The research was last updated on 15 July 2026, before Apple’s announcement, and Deepsee is the sole publisher of those counts.

Apple’s definition is also broader than the obvious cases. It covers “a virtual companion that engages a user in sexual or romantic content”, which reaches general-purpose character chatbots that offer a romantic mode among many others, not only apps marketed as AI girlfriends.

The industry has been moving this way under pressure. Character.AI announced on 29 October 2025 that it would end open-ended chat for under-18 users, with the cutoff taking effect on 25 November 2025. The US Federal Trade Commission had issued orders on 11 September 2025 to seven companies, including Alphabet, Character Technologies, Meta Platforms, OpenAI, Snap and X.AI, demanding information on how they limit harms to children and teenagers using AI chatbots. The pressure has grown since: eight US states sued OpenAI in October 2026 seeking mandatory age checks, and Common Sense Media rated ChatGPT for Teens an “Unacceptable Risk” for under-18s the same month.

What Apple Has Not Said

Apple’s notice is four paragraphs long and leaves several practical questions open.

  • Enforcement: Apple names no penalty for an app that misses the 12 January 2027 deadline, and does not say whether such an app would be blocked from updating or removed.
  • Installed apps: The notice is silent on what happens to an app a minor has already downloaded when its rating rises to 18+.
  • Borderline apps: Apple does not define how much romantic content a general-purpose chatbot needs before the descriptor applies. The declaration is made by the developer.
  • Verification: Apple has not extended the adult-confirmation requirement beyond Australia, Brazil and Singapore, and has not said whether it intends to.

The declaration being self-reported is the weakest link. Apple is relying on developers to classify their own apps correctly, and App Review to catch those that do not.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Apple Delete Dating Apps From My iPhone?

No. Nothing is removed from any device on that date. 16 November 2026 is when the two new questions appear for developers in App Store Connect, and Apple has not said anything about apps already installed on a phone.

Does Apple Now Verify My Age for Dating Apps?

In most countries, no. An 18+ rating is a store classification rather than an age check. Only in Australia, Brazil and Singapore does the App Store require users to be confirmed as adults before an 18+ download completes, a requirement that has applied since 24 February 2026.

Which Apps Count as Dating and Relationships?

Apple’s definition covers features that enable dating or relationship connections between real people, and virtual companions that engage a user in sexual or romantic content. That takes in dating services and AI companion apps alike. Developers decide whether their own app qualifies.

Does This Apply to Android and Google Play?

No. This is an App Store Connect policy and applies only to apps distributed through Apple’s App Store. Google operates a separate rating system, and Apple’s announcement does not cover it.

What Happens When a Developer Misses the Deadline?

Apple has not said. The notice sets the deadline but names no consequence, so the outcome for a non-compliant app is unknown as of 4 November 2026.
