Meta has stopped developing new features for the Meta Quest 2 and is retiring it in stages. The final release, Horizon OS 2.13, reaches every unit by March 2027, and security patches stop at the end of 2027. Meta confirmed the dates on its developer blog in early November 2026.

The Three Dates That Matter for Quest 2 Owners

Three separate deadlines are involved, and they are not the same thing as the headset switching off.

DateWhat Changes
January 2027Horizon OS 2.13, the last feature release for the Quest 2 and Quest Pro, begins rolling out.
March 2027Version 2.13 has reached every Quest 2 and Quest Pro unit. No system features, platform capabilities or developer toolkit versions arrive after it.
December 2027Quarterly security patches and critical bug fixes end. It is also the last month in which a developer can submit a brand-new app that supports the Quest 2.

As of 3 November 2026, nothing has changed on the headset itself. The Quest 2 is still receiving updates, apps still install and the store still sells software for it. The first visible step is the 2.13 rollout in January 2027.

Will a Quest 2 Stop Working in March 2027?

No. Meta is ending new development for the Quest 2, not disabling it.

Games already installed keep running, and titles in the Horizon Store that list Quest 2 support can still be found, bought and downloaded. Meta has said it will not pull apps from the store purely because a headset has reached end of feature development.

Cross-play also survives. A Quest 2 owner can still play multiplayer sessions alongside friends on a Quest 3 or Quest 3S, and Meta has given no end date for that. PC VR over Meta Quest Link continues to work as well, which matters for anyone using the headset mainly as a tethered display for a gaming computer. Routine hardware problems such as a Quest 2 that will not charge are unaffected by the software timetable.

What Quest 2 Owners Actually Lose

The loss is future software, not current function.

  • New system features: anything Meta ships after version 2.13 is limited to the Quest 3, Quest 3S and later headsets.
  • New releases: from January 2028, no newly submitted game or app can list the Quest 2 as a supported device, so new titles will simply not appear for it.
  • Security cover: after December 2027 Meta has promised no further patches, which is the point at which the headset becomes a poor choice for a shared or workplace device.
  • Developer attention: studios updating an existing game can still ship fixes and new content to Quest 2 players, but the commercial reason to keep doing so thins out once no new buyers can arrive.

One protection stays in place. If a developer decides to drop Quest 2 support for a game in a way that costs players access to content or services, Meta requires at least 180 days’ notice. Games should not vanish without warning.

Why Quest Pro Owners Got Less for $1,499

The Quest Pro is being retired on the same timetable as the Quest 2 despite arriving two years later and costing five times as much.

Meta unveiled the Quest Pro on 11 October 2022 and released it on 25 October 2022 at $1,499.99. The price was cut to about $1,000 roughly four months later, in March 2023, after reporting described sales as underwhelming. By September 2024 it was discontinued.

That leaves the Pro with a little over five years between release and the end of security patches, against about seven for the $299 Quest 2. The expensive headset gets the shorter life.

How the Quest 2 Went From $299 Bestseller to Discontinued

The Quest 2 was the headset that took standalone virtual reality from niche to mass market, and its pricing moved in both directions before the end.

  • 16 September 2020: announced as the Oculus Quest 2.
  • 13 October 2020: released at $299 for 64GB and $399 for 256GB.
  • 2021: the 64GB model is replaced by a 128GB version at the same price.
  • 2022: the Oculus name is dropped and the headset becomes the Meta Quest 2.
  • 1 August 2022: after an announcement on 27 July, prices rise $100, taking the 128GB model to $399.99 and the 256GB model to $499.99. Meta cited the rising cost of making and shipping its products, and bundled the game Beat Saber to soften it.
  • 2023: prices come back down as the Quest 3 arrives.
  • September 2024: Meta discontinues the Quest 2 and Quest Pro at its Connect conference, alongside the Quest 3S.
  • November 2026: Meta tells developers feature development has ended.

How many sold is less certain than the dates. Specialist outlets put lifetime Quest 2 sales at roughly 20 million units, but that is an estimate drawn from reporting rather than an official figure, and Meta has never published headset sales numbers. The firmest public data point is from Qualcomm, which supplies the chip and said in November 2021 that at least 10 million units had shipped worldwide.

What Meta Did the Last Time It Retired a Headset

The original Oculus Quest went through the same sequence, which is the best guide to what Quest 2 owners should expect.

Meta closed new app submissions for the first-generation Quest on 30 April 2024, after which no new title could be published for it. Owners were not locked out of what they had, but the catalogue stopped growing and the device drifted out of the current ecosystem. The Quest 2 is now entering the same phase, on a longer leash and with a much larger installed base behind it.

Should You Upgrade From a Quest 2, and to What?

There is no urgency before 2027, and the direct replacement costs what the Quest 2 did at launch.

The Quest 3S was announced at Meta Connect on 25 September 2024 and went on sale on 15 October 2024 at $299.99 for 128GB and $399.99 for 256GB, the same entry price the Quest 2 carried in 2020. It runs the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip with 8GB of memory, and it is the model that stays on Meta’s supported list after March 2027. Meta has not offered an official trade-in for old Quest headsets, so selling privately or waiting for a retail promotion is the practical route.

Anyone weighing the upgrade should note where Meta is putting its effort now. The company has moved its consumer attention towards wearables, including AI glasses starting at $249, and has described future eyewear as the next leap for users rather than promising more from standalone headsets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Meta Quest 2 Still Supported?

Yes, for now. It receives updates until version 2.13 completes its rollout in March 2027 and security patches until the end of 2027.

Can I Still Buy Games for a Quest 2?

Yes. Titles listing Quest 2 support remain purchasable and downloadable from the Horizon Store, and Meta says it will not delist apps simply because the headset has reached end of feature development.

When Was the Meta Quest 2 Discontinued?

Meta discontinued it in September 2024, announcing the decision at Connect at the same time as the Quest 3S.

How Many Meta Quest 2 Headsets Were Sold?

Meta has never released a figure. Industry estimates cluster around 20 million over the headset’s life, and Qualcomm said at least 10 million had shipped by November 2021.

Does the Quest Pro Lose Support at the Same Time?

Yes. Both headsets share the January 2027 to December 2027 timetable, which gives the $1,499.99 Quest Pro a shorter supported life than the cheaper Quest 2.
