Measured against the stage rather than the screen, the gap is far longer. His previous theatre work was The Little Dog Laughed, which opened off-Broadway at Second Stage in January 2006 and ran on Broadway at the Cort Theatre from 13 November 2006 to 18 February 2007. He won a Theatre World Award for it in 2007, and had not acted in a play since.

Kowalski imagines the night in Provincetown in 1947 when Marlon Brando, then unknown, met Tennessee Williams while Williams was looking for someone to play Stanley Kowalski in A Streetcar Named Desire. Galecki was raised in Oak Park, Illinois, outside Chicago, and began working as a child actor in the area.
Explaining the decision, he said the planets aligned, crediting Ostrin’s writing and Hanlon’s vision along with “the feeling that after seven years of quietly observing life, I finally had something new to bring back to the work”. He described playing Williams as portraying one of his artistic heroes.
This is not the play’s first outing. It ran off-Broadway at the Duke on 42nd Street from 12 January to 23 February 2025, with Robin Lord Taylor as Williams and Brandon Flynn as Brando. Playbill reported in June 2025 that producers intended to move that staging to Broadway in the autumn, though no theatre and no cast had been attached at the time. Reviewing the Chicago production, the Chicago Reader described it as again heading toward Broadway; no Broadway dates have been announced.
How Did the Reviews Land?
Chicago’s two main reviews, both published on 23 September 2026, disagreed about him.
Writing in the Chicago Sun-Times, Steven Oxman called it a highly competent performance but not an inspired one, crediting Galecki with avoiding impersonation. In the Chicago Reader, Kerry Reid was warmer, writing that he inhabits the self-dramatising and self-deprecating sides of Williams with ease and that his character’s commitment to writing is believable.
Both notices treated the casting as a deliberate move away from the sitcom work he is known for, in the way that other sitcom leads who left the format have also done. Tickets for the Chicago run were listed at $37 to $97.
