Euphoria ended after three seasons. The long-delayed third season premiered on HBO on 12 April 2026, four years and two months after the season two finale, and its eighth episode aired on 31 May 2026. Creator Sam Levinson confirmed days later that there are no plans for a fourth season.
Is Euphoria Definitely Over?
Yes, on the word of its creator. Speaking to The New York Times’ Popcast after the finale, Levinson said: “In terms of the story we set out to tell, which is a story about addiction and its consequences, this feels like the end to me.”
The confusion had a specific cause. HBO billed the 31 May episode as a season finale rather than a series finale, so viewers could not tell from the network’s own labelling whether the show was finished. Levinson’s interview, reported on 1 June 2026, is what settled it.
Before the finale aired he had already said he writes “every season like it’s the last season” and had “no plans” for a fourth. No fourth season has been ordered, though television is not always final about these things – Drunk History returned years after its cancellation.
Why Did Season Three Take More Than Four Years?
No single cause. Season two finished on 27 February 2022 and season three was announced shortly afterwards, then ran into four separate obstacles before filming even started.
- The 2023 strikes: The Writers Guild of America and SAG-AFTRA work stoppages ran from May to November 2023 and halted scripted production across the industry.
- Two deaths in the production: Angus Cloud, who played Fezco, died on 31 July 2023 at 25; producer Kevin Turen died in November 2023.
- A creative reset: HBO and Levinson spent months deciding where the story would go once the characters left high school. The answer was a five-year time jump into adulthood.
- Cast availability: Zendaya, Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney and Hunter Schafer all became film leads between seasons, which made a shared shooting window difficult to find.
Shooting was postponed indefinitely in March 2024. Filming finally began in January 2025, was publicly confirmed on 10 February 2025, and wrapped on 15 November 2025. The premiere date followed in December 2025.
What Happened to the Cast Between Seasons?
The cast that returned in 2026 was not the cast that left in 2022. Seven main actors came back: Zendaya, Hunter Schafer, Jacob Elordi, Sydney Sweeney, Alexa Demie, Maude Apatow and Eric Dane. Martha Kelly and Chloe Cherry were promoted from guest roles.
Four regulars did not return. Barbie Ferreira, who played Kat, left after season two. Storm Reid, Algee Smith and Austin Abrams also departed.
The most significant absence arrived last. Eric Dane, who had played Cal Jacobs since 2019, announced in April 2025 that he had been diagnosed with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and continued filming season three after disclosing it. He died on 19 February 2026 at the age of 53, seven weeks before the season premiered. His family confirmed the death in a statement, and his death certificate, obtained by NBC News, recorded respiratory failure with ALS as the underlying cause.
His performance in season three therefore aired posthumously, beginning with the 12 April 2026 premiere.
How Did Euphoria End?

Rue Bennett, played by Zendaya across all three seasons, dies of an overdose in the final episode. Levinson addressed the choice directly in a segment aired after the episode: “It just felt like the honest ending. The honest ending is people like Rue don’t make it.”
He also tied the ending to Angus Cloud, saying he wanted “to tell this story for Angus and for people who weren’t granted a second chance”. The season had moved the characters five years past high school, which is what allowed the story to reach a conclusion rather than another cliffhanger.
What Was Never Confirmed
Several widely repeated claims about the delay were never verified by anyone involved. Reports of a falling-out between Zendaya and Levinson were never confirmed by either of them.
A podcast claim in 2024 that the season had been scrapped entirely was answered by HBO, which said publicly that it remained committed to making the episodes. The season was made. Cancellation talk around a series that eventually aired is a different matter from a show that genuinely does get pulled, as Wonder Man found after being renewed and then cancelled.
Barbie Ferreira’s exit was also widely framed as a dispute. Both she and the production described her character’s story as having reached its end, and no other account has been confirmed.
