Disney shut down the Play Disney Parks app on 16 September 2026, ending an eight-year run. The free companion app was pulled from both app stores that day and existing users lost the ability to log in, along with their saved achievements. Disney gave no reason.
What the Play Disney Parks App Did
It was a free companion app that layered games, trivia and interactive story elements over queues and themed lands at Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort.
The app launched on 30 June 2018, timed to the opening of Toy Story Land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. Its opening line-up put minigames into the queues for Toy Story Mania, Peter Pan’s Flight, Space Mountain and Slinky Dog Dash, and added park trivia, unlockable achievement badges and a library of current and retired attraction music.
Its most ambitious use came with Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. Inside the land, the app became a Datapad that guests used to scan cargo crates, translate Aurebesh signage, interact with droids and panels, and tune into transmissions, unlocking virtual items as they went. Later additions included the DuckTales World Showcase Adventure at Epcot and quest tracking for the Disney Fab 50 statues.
What Still Works and What Is Gone
One Galaxy’s Edge experience survives through MagicBand+, and everything that existed only inside the app ended on 16 September 2026.

The practical effect for guests is narrow but real. Nothing on a phone replaces the Datapad, so the interactive layer that made Galaxy’s Edge feel responsive is now limited to the bounty hunting game and the physical screens in the land.
Did Disney Say Why?
No. Disney retired the app without publishing a reason and without naming a replacement.
The only direct communication was a notice inside the app itself, which read: “The Play Disney Parks App will no longer be available starting September 16, 2026. We hope you’ve enjoyed the games, trivia and in-park adventures along the way. Writers who cover the parks closely have pointed out that the app drew little sustained use after its Galaxy’s Edge peak and that development had largely stopped years before the shutdown. What to Use in the Parks Now
There is no direct successor, so My Disney Experience remains the main app and MagicBand+ carries the one surviving Galaxy’s Edge game.
Disney spent 2026 consolidating its parks software rather than expanding it. My Disney Experience was widened during the year to serve both Walt Disney World and Disneyland Resort, pulling tickets, Lightning Lane passes, mobile food ordering and hotel check-in into a single planning app. Disney has not said that any Play Disney Parks feature was moved into it.
