The WMI Host Provider is a big part of Windows, always operating behind it. You may request information from other applications on your device on your system. Normally this method does not use much machine resources but can use a lot of CPU if your system has another process badly.

You may have found the Host WMI Provider hogs your CPU use. Your PC slows down when you start using CPUs in Task Manager. This is also recorded by many users of Windows 10, who are not alone. You should solve the high CPU use problem on your own. Frustrating as it appears.

What Is WMI Provider Host (WmiPrvSE.exe)?

“WMI” means “Windows Management Instrumentation”. This is a Windows feature that allows structured information on the condition of your Windows operating system and its data to be obtained from software and administrative scripts. This information is supplied by “WMI Providers” on request. For example, software or commands might find BitLocker drive encryption status information, display entries from the event log, or request data from installed applications like WMI providers. The WMI providers included on its Website are identified by Microsoft.

This is particularly useful for organizations managing PCs centrally, in particular, because it is also possible to request information via scripts and view it in administrative consoles in a standard way. Although some software you have installed on a home PC can ask for system information through the WMI GUI.

WMI itself is also available to find several useful data objects, which are typically not displayed on your own PC on the Windows GUI. For eg, we covered the tool for the WMI command line to get the serial number of your PC, find the model number of your motherboard, or just display a hard drive SMART health status.

Why is WMI Provider Host Using So Much CPU?

It’s not supposed to run all the time for WMI Provider Host. High CPU usage is likely just a sign that another application is requesting data via WMI. It stays uninterrupted and answers. Technically, as long as it remains idle it does not waste the CPU power. Any CPU resources can be used to address a request and this usage should take just a while. Extensive CPU use is a warning that something is awfully wrong since the WMI Provider Host shouldn’t really use much CPU resources.

The trigger may be anything, it could have stuck in a bad situation or another service that continues to run the WmiPrvSE.exe service must have been unstable or a malicious program that holds the WMI Provider Host in the loop.

Regardless of the cause, we’ve found a few easy solutions to get rid of WMI Provider Host’s Windows PC High Use Issue.

How to Fix WMI Provider Host high CPU usage issue in Windows 10?

If you use your machine resources for unnecessary background operations, it can be irritating as they slow down and even freeze your computer sometimes. At CPUsage, we dedicated ourselves to alleviating your frustration by seeking some working solutions.

Solution 1: Run Virus Scan

In certain cases, viruses or malware are the culprits. You just have to run the antivirus software to repair it. You can do it right now if you haven’t done it yet.

If your PC detects any unauthorized software or programs, delete them from your PC and restart them later.

Solution 2: Boot into safe mode with Networking

Try booting your Windows System in safe mode with networking allowed if these two corrections don’t work for you. What it theoretically does is that, in safe mode, only all other services relating to application software in your device can run on the system software. You will be able to hear about one of the resources relating to the programs you enabled.

Boot your Windows 10 PC into safe mode with networking-

1) Press the Windows logo key and R simultaneously on your keyboard and tap msconfig into your search box and press Enter.

2) Go on the Boot tab and then pick the Network option by clicking on the Secure Boot box. To save the application, press Apply and OK.

3) Make sure your files and data have been saved and then press Reboot to enter Safe Mode.

4) Press the Windows logo key and X simultaneously when in Safe Mode, pick Windows PowerShell (Admin).

5) Then type the following command in and press Enter.

msdt.exe -id MaintenanceDiagnostic

You’ll see a problem-solving window appearing. To allow troubleshooting to run, click Next.

If your machine has some problem found by the troubleshooter, please take the instructions to fix it.

6) Type the next command and press the Enter, button again in the PowerShell window.

msdt.exe /id PerformanceDiagnostic

You can see a troubleshooting output window pop-up, just press Next to go ahead.

However, do as the system orders you to do if you see the message that something needs to be changed in your system.

7) You have to start in a normal mood when the troubleshooting process is complete. Repeat step 1.  Go to the Boot tab and leave the Secure Boot box. To save and leave, press Submit and OK. Return to the normal mode of your computer.

Solution 3: Restart WMI Provider Host Service

The problem is, in some situations, to occupy so much of your PC resources with WMI Provider Host Service. It can be restarted:

1) Press the Windows logo key and R simultaneously on your keyboard and type.msc into the search box and press Enter.
2) Press the W key for Windows Instrument Management Service to quickly find. Right-click it and choose Reset.
3) Press Windows key and X simultaneously, pick Prompt command (Admin).
Note: You must type cmd.exe on the search bar, and right-click the command prompt option, and select Run as administrator, while you are using Windows 10 Creators Upgrade.
4) In the Prompt command window, type and click Enter after each command in the following commands.

net stop iphlpsvc
net stop wscsvc
net stop Winmgmt
net start Winmgmt
net start wscsvc
net start iphlpsvc

5) After the commands restart your PC.

Solution 4: Uninstall Components and Drivers Causing the Problem

5) After the commands restart your PC.

It is necessary to download and install only trusted programs and drivers.

You can upgrade and install your drivers in two ways: Automatic and Manually.

Can I Disable WMI Provider Host?

The “Windows Management Instrumentation” service on your device can theoretically be deactivated. However, several different items can break down on your PC. It’s a vital component and should be left alone in the Windows operating system.

“If this is stopped, most Windows-based software won’t work correctly,” says the official explanation on this service. Don’t disable this service! Don’t disable this service! You need to locate the mechanism on your computer if you have a problem with this, because the WMI Provider Host uses a lot of CPU and updates, deletes, or disable it instead.
