Why Did Notion Shut Notion Mail Down?
Notion said its own AI agents had made the inbox redundant for most people using it.
“As Notion agents have gotten more capable, we’ve seen more users hand off email workflows to them,” the company said in its June announcement. It put a number on that: more than half of Notion Mail users were managing email without ever opening the inbox.
Rather than maintain a mail client for the minority still opening it, Notion chose to put its effort into agents that read, draft and send on a user’s behalf. The decision was about where the company spends engineering time, not a technical failure of the product.
What Happened to Your Emails and Settings?
The emails were never at risk; the customisation built on top of them was.
Notion Mail connected to Gmail rather than hosting mail itself, so every message stayed in the user’s Google account throughout. That account carries on as before, along with any aliases configured on it.
What did not survive was everything that existed only inside the app. Notion told users to export four things before the cut-off:
- Drafts: unsent messages written in Notion Mail rather than in Gmail.

Notion Mail also worked only with Gmail and Google Workspace accounts, so users on Outlook or iCloud were never affected.
Which Notion Email Features Still Work?
Three of them, and they are the reason the shutdown was narrower than it sounded.
The Gmail AI connector, which gives Notion AI access to a Gmail inbox, was not withdrawn. Mail blocks embedded in Notion pages still function. Agents that read, draft or send email through Gmail or Outlook also continue to run.
In other words, Notion did not exit email. It closed the inbox people looked at and kept the parts that work without being looked at.

Notion named no successor, and because the mail itself never moved, switching means choosing a new front end for the same account.
