Apple has confirmed the iPhone Duo release date as Friday 23 October 2026. The foldable iPhone opens for pre-order on 16 October in more than 70 countries, priced from $1,999 in the United States and £1,999 in the United Kingdom. Apple announced both dates at its 9 September event.
What Apple Announced
iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable phone, a book-style device that opens like a passport to reveal a single large screen. Supply-chain reports had pointed to a folding iPhone arriving in 2026 for more than two years before this announcement.
Closed, it shows a 5.4-inch outer OLED display at 1398 by 2034 pixels. Opened, it becomes a 7.6-inch inner folding OLED display at 1878 by 2670 pixels, which Apple says carries a nano-texture finish that minimises the visible crease. Both panels are Super Retina XDR with ProMotion and an always-on mode.
Inside is the A20 Pro, the same 2-nanometre chip Apple put in the iPhone 18 Pro, with a 6-core CPU and a 7-core GPU. The frame is grade 5 titanium, the front is Ceramic Shield 2 and the back is Ceramic Shield. The hinge is built from more than 100 precision components. It carries an IP68 rating for dust and water, which Apple specifies as a maximum depth of 6 metres for up to 30 minutes.
According to Apple’s published technical specifications, iPhone Duo measures 5.2mm thick when open and 11.3mm when closed, and weighs 254 grams. That makes it thicker and heavier than most Android book-style foldables on sale, as 9to5Google noted in its comparison on 9 September.
The rear camera is a 48-megapixel dual Fusion system: a main lens at 26mm and ƒ/1.6, and an ultra-wide at 13mm and ƒ/2.2. The outer screen carries a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera; the inner screen hides a FaceTime camera under the display. Apple quotes up to 44 hours of video playback using the outer display alone, 31 hours on the inner display, and about 24 hours when both are used equally, from a dual-battery design with one cell on each side.
John Ternus, who became Apple’s chief executive on 1 September 2026 when Tim Cook moved to executive chairman, called iPhone Duo the most transformational change to iPhone since the original.
How Much iPhone Duo Costs
iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States for 256GB and rises to $3,199 for 2TB.
Apple sells four storage tiers. The United Kingdom prices, taken from Apple’s own UK store listing, use the same numerals in pounds.

Elsewhere the entry price varies more than the exchange rate alone explains. Apple lists iPhone Duo from €2,339 in France, €2,299 in Germany, C$2,999 in Canada and ₹299,900 in India, or roughly $3,390 at early-September 2026 rates. Apple also offers US financing at $83.29 a month over 24 months. A first-party case costs $79 and a folio with a kickstand costs $129.
For comparison, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 starts at $1,899 in the United States, putting iPhone Duo $100 above it. In India the gap is far wider: Samsung’s foldable starts at ₹179,999 against Apple’s ₹299,900. Xiaomi, meanwhile, put its 18 Fold on sale in mainland China from 10,999 yuan, about $1,640, the day after Apple’s event.
When Each Country Gets iPhone Duo
Apple is releasing iPhone Duo in two waves, a week apart.
- Friday 16 October 2026: Pre-orders open at 5am Pacific Time, which is 1pm in the United Kingdom.
- Friday 23 October 2026: First wave goes on sale in the United States and more than 70 other countries, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Singapore, South Korea, Türkiye, the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom.
- Friday 30 October 2026: A second wave of 28 further countries and regions goes on sale.
As of 10 September 2026, Apple has named the major first-wave markets but has not published the full list of the 28 second-wave countries. Anyone outside the named markets should treat 30 October as the earliest realistic date rather than a confirmed one for their country.
iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27.1. That matters for timing: iOS 27 itself reaches existing iPhones on 14 September 2026, so Duo buyers get a slightly later build than the rest of the line-up on day one.
Face ID Is Gone, Replaced by Touch ID
iPhone Duo has no Face ID. Apple has moved biometric unlocking to a fingerprint sensor built into the side button, the arrangement it calls Touch ID.
Apple’s technical specifications list the authentication method as a fingerprint sensor in the side button, with no TrueDepth camera array on either panel. Engadget and MacRumors both reported after hands-on time that the sensor sits under the thumb and works whether the phone is open or closed, and that multiple fingerprints and Apple Watch unlock are supported.
The practical consequence is worth knowing before you pre-order. Apps that rely on Face ID fall back to Touch ID or a passcode, and any feature built specifically on the TrueDepth sensor, such as Face ID-authenticated payments prompts, now depends on a fingerprint being read cleanly. Wet or cold fingers are the usual failure case.
Every iPhone Duo Is eSIM Only
There is no physical SIM tray on iPhone Duo in any country. Apple’s specifications list dual eSIM with no physical SIM support.
Apple has previously sold eSIM-only iPhones in the United States while keeping SIM trays elsewhere. iPhone Duo removes the tray worldwide, and Apple has said the space freed up went to the batteries. MacRumors reported the same eSIM-only arrangement on 9 September.
This affects two groups of buyers directly. Anyone whose carrier does not yet support eSIM cannot use that carrier on this phone, and travellers who normally buy a local prepaid SIM will need an eSIM-capable local plan instead. Check with your operator before ordering rather than after.
iPhone Duo Against iPhone 18 Pro
The two phones share a chip and a camera resolution but differ on screen, price, biometrics and date.

The iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199 and the Pro Max at $1,299, a $100 rise over the equivalent iPhone 17 Pro models. Its headline camera change is a variable aperture on the 48-megapixel main lens, using physical aperture blades, which iPhone Duo does not have. Buyers who want the newest camera hardware rather than the folding screen are better served by the Pro, and five weeks earlier.
What Apple Has Not Said
Three gaps in Apple’s disclosure matter to anyone spending $1,999 on a first-generation folding phone.
- No fold-cycle rating: Apple describes the hinge as built to withstand daily use and many folding cycles but has not published a tested number of open-close cycles, a figure rival foldable makers usually quote.
- No crease measurement: Apple says the nano-texture finish minimises the visible crease. It has not published the crease’s depth or width, or any comparison against other foldables. Hands-on reports from Tom’s Guide on 9 September described the crease as visible but not detectable by touch.
- No scratch rating for the inner screen: Ceramic Shield 2 covers the outer front glass and Apple credits it with three times better scratch resistance. The folding inner display uses a different material, and Apple has not said how its scratch resistance compares.
Apple Pencil support is confirmed but not shipping on day one. Apple says iPhone Duo will work with the USB-C Apple Pencil later in 2026, without naming a date.
Independent teardowns, drop tests and long-term hinge testing will not exist until units reach reviewers, which is unlikely before the week of 16 October. Anyone pre-ordering on 16 October is doing so before that evidence is published.
