Managing your own Discord server isn’t always a walk in the park, but it’s a great way to stay in touch with your friends and build a community.
Running an active Discord server comes with some administrative headaches, especially when it comes to deleting negative or otherwise unacceptable messages from the server’s history.
It’s possible to have tens of thousands of messages in your Discord text chat, depending on the size of your server. Whether you’re trying to purge your inbox of unwanted messages or simply want a fresh start, knowing how to delete everything is essential.
Here, I’ll show you how to manage your Discord server’s message backlog, including how to delete all your messages.
How to Delete All Discord Messages
When two people communicate via Discord, they can use Direct Messages to communicate with each other privately, or they can use channel messages to communicate with the entire group of people on a specific channel.
The rules for each type of message are different. First, administrators were able to bulk delete messages in Discord’s native UI. Because so many administrators were simultaneously deleting messages in bulk, this caused issues with the database.
As a result, the native UI no longer includes bulk-delete functionality. It is still possible to delete all of the messages on your Discord server, even if it is more difficult than before.
How to Delete Direct Messages in Discord
You can delete a Direct Message in Discord by closing the chat window or by erasing the message itself.
Remove direct messages by following these steps:
- Select Message from the context menu that appears when you right-click on the name of the person with whom you’ve been exchanging Direct Messages.
- You can delete a conversation by hovering over it and clicking the X that appears.
There is no confirmation dialogue, so don’t go clicking the X on conversations you might want to keep..
This is all you need if you only want to conceal a few Direct Messages. Continue reading for instructions on how to delete channel messages.
How to Delete Channel Messages in Discord
Although channel messages can’t be deleted like direct messages, there are a few ways to do so.
It is possible to delete messages from a Discord channel in one of three ways.
Method 1: Manual Deletion
Manually deleting all channel messages is easy if you follow these steps:
- To delete a message, open the text channel in which it is located.
- Wait for the three-dot icon to appear on the far right of the message after you’ve hovered over it.
- Simply right-click on the icon and then choose Delete from the contextual menu that appears.
You will be prompted to confirm your selection in a new window. Simply hit the Delete key.
If you only need to get rid of a few problematic messages, this method works fine. However, it is clearly not appropriate for getting rid of large numbers of text messages.
One of the methods listed below must be used to get rid of multiple messages at once.
Method 2: Use a Discord Bot
There are a number of bots that allow you to delete large amounts of data at once. Server administrators, on the other hand, prefer the MEE6 bot.
The MEE6 bot can be installed in a matter of minutes. Take the following steps to get started:
- Go to the MEE6 site by clicking here.
- Add to Discord by clicking this button.
- Decide on the proper server to use.
- To link the MEE6 bot to your Discord server, click the Continue button in the popup window.
After that, MEE6 will ask you for permission to delete messages. Select “Authorize” from the Authorize drop-down menu. - A captcha box must be clicked in order for users to be authenticated.
- You can use the browser window that appears once MEE6 is installed to perform a variety of functions, as shown below, or you can use Discord Chat commands to delete messages and more.
The following commands can be used to remove messages from your Discord chat app:
- To remove the last 100 messages sent by a specific user, type ‘!clear @username’.
- To remove the last 500 messages from the channel, type ‘!clear 500.’
As many as 1,000 messages can be deleted at a time by simply altering the number.
To delete a large number of messages at once, this is by far the most convenient method. Remind yourself that if the command doesn’t work, you can always go to the MEE6 website and click on ‘Moderator.’ The command will function correctly if you enable this feature.
Method 3: Clone the Channel
Cloning the channel is the last resort if the MEE6 alternative doesn’t work. The old message history of the channel is removed during this process, resulting in a new copy of the channel.
Please note that cloning does not always copy all of the bots from the old channel to the new one.
- To clone an existing channel, simply right-click on it. Choose the Clone Channel option.
- You have the option to rename the duplicated channel.
- Get rid of the old one. Open the new clone and add any bots you need.
It is possible to create a new channel by cloning an existing one, but it will also add users from the old one and recreate their permissions. It’s a lot easier than starting a new channel from scratch with this method. Your old channel has been deleted, and your new one has the same configurations as the old one.
Recovering Deleted Messages
It’s possible to recover messages that you’ve mistakenly deleted, or that you’d like to use as evidence in a report. Deleted Discord messages are not kept on the company’s servers. As a result, you won’t be able to get them back through Discord, but there are a few workarounds you can try.
Inappropriate messages can be captured with a bot that saves them all, or you can simply take a screenshot of them as soon as they appear. Assuming you’re contacting the support team about something found on a Discord server, you’ll need evidence of those communications.
