Belkin shut down the Wemo cloud service on 31 January 2026, ending app control, remote access and voice assistant support for most Wemo smart home devices. Belkin announced the decision on 10 July 2025. Only four Thread-based models and devices already paired with Apple HomeKit kept working.
What Stopped Working on 31 January 2026?
Everything that depended on Belkin’s servers stopped on that date, which for most owners meant everything they used the device for.
According to Belkin’s own end-of-support notice, the Wemo app no longer functions or receives updates, and all cloud-based features ended. That covers remote access from outside the home, schedules and rules stored in the cloud, and the integrations with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.
The hardware itself was not disabled. A Wemo smart plug still passes power and still has a physical button, so a lamp plugged into one can be switched by hand. What it lost was the part that made it smart. Belkin’s notice also tells owners the app may be manually removed from their phones, because it no longer does anything for affected products.
The loss is not symmetrical across platforms. Devices paired with Apple HomeKit before the cutoff kept local control through the Apple Home app, while Google Home users were left with no local fallback at all.
Which Wemo Devices Still Work?
Four Thread-based Wemo products were never affected by the shutdown and continue to work through Apple HomeKit.
| Model | Product | Status after 31 January 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| WLS0503 | Wemo Smart Light Switch 3-Way | Unaffected, works over Thread |
| WSC010 | Wemo Stage Smart Scene Controller | Unaffected, works over Thread |
| WSP100 | Wemo Smart Plug with Thread | Unaffected, works over Thread |
| WDC010 | Wemo Smart Video Doorbell Camera | Unaffected, works over Thread |
A second, larger group of Wi-Fi devices kept working only on one condition: they had to be added to Apple HomeKit before 31 January 2026. Belkin’s list of those models includes the Wemo Mini Smart Plug (WSP080), the Wemo Outdoor Plug (WSP090), the Wemo Smart Light Switch (WLS040) and the Wi-Fi Smart Dimmer (WDS060). Those devices now run on HomeKit’s local control, with no Wemo app and no Belkin account in the loop.
Anyone who missed that deadline cannot do the pairing now. The setup process for HomeKit ran through the Wemo app, and the app can no longer complete it.
Can Old Wemo Devices Be Saved Without the Cloud?
Yes, for several device types, because older Wemo hardware exposes a local network interface that never needed Belkin’s servers.
Home Assistant, the open-source home automation platform, lists its Wemo integration as local push, with a fallback to local polling. It discovers Wemo devices on the local network or accepts a static IP address, and it supports Wemo switches, motion sensors, dimmers, light bulbs and the Wemo-enabled Mr. Coffee maker. None of that traffic goes through Belkin.
The community Python library pyWemo covers the same local interface and can reconfigure a device that has been factory reset, which matters because the normal reset-and-set-up path ran through the dead app. This route needs a machine on the home network running Home Assistant, so it suits owners already comfortable with self-hosted automation rather than someone who simply wants their plug back. Belkin does not support, document or endorse it.
The practical limit is coverage. The local interface handles the older Wi-Fi switches, sensors and bulbs well; it is not a substitute for the cloud camera features that some Wemo products relied on.
Who Qualifies for a Wemo Refund?
Only owners whose device was still inside its warranty period on or after 31 January 2026 are eligible, and they have to ask.
Belkin’s notice says a refund may be available for products still under warranty on or after that date, that proof of purchase is required, and that no refund requests were processed before 31 January 2026. Claims go through a Belkin support form rather than the retailer.
That test excludes most of the installed base. Wemo devices were sold for more than a decade, and the affected range included products bought long before the announcement, so an owner with a plug from 2018 or a motion sensor from 2020 falls outside the window entirely. The cutoff is the reason the shutdown turned into a legal dispute rather than a support story.
The Class Action Filed in February 2026
A proposed class action over the shutdown was filed on 24 February 2026 in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey.
The case is docketed as Fettig et al v. Belkin International, Inc., number 3:26-cv-01590, brought by plaintiffs from Indiana and California. The complaint covers 27 Wemo products, among them motion sensors, cameras, light switches, smart plugs and connected appliances, and alleges that Belkin rendered them obsolete overnight by withdrawing cloud and web features without providing an operational alternative.
The claims pleaded include California’s Unfair Competition Law, California’s Consumers Legal Remedies Act and the Indiana Deceptive Consumer Sales Act. The relief sought is refunds and damages for lost product value.
Separately, several US consumer law firms opened mass arbitration sign-ups for Wemo owners through 2026. Mass arbitration files many individual claims at once outside court, which is the route left open when a product’s terms require arbitration. Firms recruiting claimants have advertised figures of $500 or more per owner; those are the amounts they say they are seeking, not amounts anyone has been awarded.
Why Belkin Shut the Wemo Cloud Down
Belkin’s stated reason is resource allocation, not a technical failure or a security incident.
Its announcement said the company had made the difficult decision to end technical support for older Wemo products after careful consideration, and its support material explains that as technology evolves, Belkin must reallocate resources across the Belkin portfolio. Belkin has not published a financial figure for the Wemo cloud or a subscriber count.
Two pieces of background sit behind that wording. Belkin launched Wemo in 2012, unveiling the Wemo Switch and a companion motion sensor at CES that year, which made it one of the earliest mainstream smart plug brands and left it running a decade-old cloud platform. In January 2022 Wemo publicly moved its new hardware to Thread and Matter, the standards that allow local control without a vendor cloud, and it is exactly those Thread products that survived the shutdown. Belkin itself was acquired in 2018 by Foxconn Interconnect Technology for $866 million, alongside the Linksys and Phyn brands. Belkin has not linked the shutdown to that ownership change.
The pattern matters more than the motive for anyone buying a replacement: a device whose control path runs through a manufacturer’s servers can be switched off by that manufacturer, while one that speaks a local standard such as Matter over Thread cannot be switched off remotely in the same way. Where Things Stand as of October 2026
As of 2 October 2026, the Wemo cloud remains off, the Wemo app remains dead for affected products, and nothing Belkin has published suggests any of it is coming back.
- Cloud and app: Still shut down, with no reinstatement announced since the 31 January 2026 cutoff.
- Surviving hardware: The four Thread models, plus Wi-Fi devices that were paired to Apple HomeKit before the deadline.
- Refunds: Still limited to in-warranty devices with proof of purchase, on Belkin’s original terms.
- Litigation: No ruling in the New Jersey case has been publicly reported, and no settlement has been announced.
The most recent verified development in this story is the February 2026 court filing. Readers should treat the case as open rather than resolved, and should not expect a refund outside Belkin’s warranty test unless and until a court or arbitrator orders one.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Wemo Devices Stop Working Completely?
No. The hardware still functions as a manual switch or plug, and physical buttons still work. What ended was app control, remote access, cloud schedules and the Alexa and Google Assistant integrations.
Can I Still Download and Use the Wemo App?
No. Belkin states the app no longer functions or receives updates for affected products after 31 January 2026, and tells owners they may remove it from their phones.
Will My Wemo Still Work With Alexa or Google Home?
No. Both integrations ran through Belkin’s cloud and ended with it. Apple HomeKit is the exception, because it controls the device locally.
Is Belkin Giving Refunds for Wemo Devices?
Only for products still under warranty on or after 31 January 2026, with proof of purchase, through a Belkin support request. Older devices fall outside the policy.
Are Any Wemo Products Still Supported?
Yes. The four Thread-based models were not part of the shutdown and still work through Apple HomeKit. Every other Wemo product lost its cloud support on 31 January 2026.
