Knowing your branch name is essential because one bank can have more than two branches in the same area. Hence, a branch name helps customers to identify the specific bank branch. Many banks link your bank account with a particular branch from where you can make a deposit or withdrawal.

What if you need to apply for a credit or debit card? You can’t do that without knowing the bank branch name. Besides, consumers must know their bank’s branch; otherwise, they can’t deposit or cash a check.

Additionally, some bank mobile apps require users to write the branch name to display the account balance or transaction status. Thus, you must find the branch name to access the mobile apps of your bank.

It is important to mention that there are different ways to find the bank branch name. Here, we have mentioned all the possible ways to check your bank’s branch name from the account number:

Is It Necessary to Know Which Type of Code A Bank Uses to Find the Branch Name?

Different banks use different types of codes to send and receive payments for deposits. Thus, you must first know which type of code your bank uses to find the branch name from the account number.

You can find the branch name on your bank’s site if it uses the IBAN code. Additionally, the banks with IBAN codes let you check the branch name from the bank statement. The same process can be applied to the banks that use the SWIFT code.

Apart from the SWIFT code, some Dubai banks use the DUIBAEAD XXX BIC code. U.S. banks mostly use IBAN and SWIFT codes. Australian banks use a BSB code, the same as the SWIFT code. Indian banks use the IFSC code, which you can use to check your bank’s branch name from the account number.

What is a Bank Branch Code & How Does it Look Like?

Not all bank codes look the same, and it varies from one bank to another. A bank branch code helps in distinguishing the different branches available in your area. The branch code is printed on some banks’ chequebooks and is even available on their site.

The number contained in the branch code differs based on the bank you have an account. For instance, most international banks use IBANs as the branch code. The IBAN code contains at least 34 unique characters.

IBAN codes generally start with the country code and then the next digits are the bank transaction number. You will then see  4-letter international bank codes followed by a numeric bank sort code, and the last digits are your bank account number.

So, what does an IBAN code look like? Suppose you live in Japan and have an account with an international bank. The IBAN will look like this: GB 29 NWBK 701789 31928901. Here, ā€œNWBKā€ is the bank name ( National Westminster Bankā€ and GB is short for ā€œGreat Britainā€.

What Does Swift & IFSC Code Look Like?

SWIFT codes contain fewer characters than IBAN codes. It has 11 characters and starts with the 4-letter bank code, and then there is a 2-digit country code.

Besides, you will see a two-letter code in the SWIFT number which refers to the country you live in. The last 3 digits are your bank’s branch code. A SWIFT code in New York City’s Chase bank looks like this: CHASUS33JCC.

The Indian Financial System Code (IFSC) code also has 11 unique characters, like the SWIFT code. This code is required for online cash transactions, including IMPS, NEFT and RTGS. The first 4 characters on an IFSC code represent the bank name. For instance, if you have an account in HDFC bank, the first 4 characters will start with HDFC.

The last 6 characters help customers to know their bank branch name. Each bank branch uses a different 6-digit code for easy identification. The IFSC code of an HDFC bank in India looks like this: HDFC0005943. Here, 005943 is your bank’s branch code.

Easy Ways to Find Your Bank Branch Name from Account Number:

Everyone should know their bank branch name and number when transferring money from one account to another. Don’t fret if you don’t know these details, as there are multiple ways to find them. Here are the easiest ways to find your bank branch name:

    1. From the Bank Cheque Book

Most banks mention the branch number on the check. Hence, open the chequebook and try to find the printed numbers on the first page’s top. The first 3 digits of the typed numbers indicate your bank’s check number.

The next number is your bank’s branch number on the chequebook. Write down the number on a notepad once you spot them. Open a reliable web browser from your mobile devices like computers or phones.

Access your bank’s website and locate the search option. Enter the branch number you wrote down earlier and click the search icon. The bank’s website will display your branch name instantly on the screen. You can now use the branch name for direct deposits.

    2. From Bank Statements

Don’t have your bank’s chequebook? You can find the branch name in other bank statements, like letters or documents you received. Look through the document and check if your bank’s branch address is visible. If you haven’t received the paper statements, check for the bank statements you received online.

    3. Via a Mobile App

Finding the bank branch name or address seems easier from a mobile app. Install your bank’s app on your Android or Apple phone. Log in to the app by providing the correct bank account details. You might have to set a security PIN to unlock your bank’s mobile app.

You will notice an Account Details section when you enter the security PIN on the bank app. Tap on that option to see the type of accounts you have on that bank and under which branch.

Additionally, you will see the bank branch number and your outstanding balance in the bank account. However, these steps to check the branch name or address might vary from one bank app to another.

    4. Contact Your Bank’s Customer Service Representatives

Do you have your bank’s customer service number? Dial it from your phone to know your bank’s branch name. The customer service executives might ask for your bank account number to tell you the branch name or address.

    5. Go to the Nearest Bank Branch

If you don’t have your bank’s customer support number or chequebook, visit the nearest bank branch. Ask the bank authority for the branch address, name and number.

Don’t know where your bank branch is in your area? Open a browser and write ā€œXXXX bank near meā€ on the search bar. You will see the location of the nearest bank branch once you click the search icon.

What if Your Bank Doesn’t Have a Branch Name or Address?

Some national and international banks don’t link your account with a branch. They operate the fund deposits and other transactions online as they don’t have branches. You must access your bank’s website or mobile app if you have an account with a digital bank.

Additionally, you can use an ATM or the customer service number for online-only banks. These banks provide a mailing address if you have any issues with your bank account. Bank users can mail this address if they have any queries regarding the fund transfer.
