Three of the Shedd Aquarium belugas transferred from Marineland Canada have died, out of ten that arrived. Peekachu, Rain and Osiris died in Chicago between 25 August and 21 September 2026. Necropsies found chronic digestive disease that Shedd says was already present months or years before the whales arrived.
Which Whales Died, and Which Was Not a Marineland Transfer
Four belugas died at Shedd Aquarium in under a month, but only three of them came from Marineland. Coverage at the time counted them differently, which is why some reports described a third death and others a fourth.
| Whale | Age | Died | Origin |
|---|---|---|---|
| Peekachu | 23 | 25 August 2026 | Marineland transfer |
| Rain | 20 | 2 September 2026 | Marineland transfer |
| Beethoven | 34 | 2 September 2026 | Longtime Shedd resident |
| Osiris | 26 | 21 September 2026 | Marineland transfer |
Beethoven, a male who had lived at Shedd for decades, died on the same day as Rain. Shedd said his death is not believed to be connected to the transferred whales, and his necropsy pointed to changes associated with old age, including cardiovascular disease.
A fourth Marineland beluga, Jelly Bean, died after being sent to Oceanogràfic in València, Spain, bringing the total number of transfer-related beluga deaths to four across two countries.
Why Thirty Whales Had to Leave Marineland
The whales were moved because Marineland shut down and could no longer pay to feed them. The marine park in Niagara Falls, Ontario, closed in 2024 after years of controversy and animal-welfare allegations, leaving about 30 belugas behind with their care funded by donations.
When that money ran short, Marineland warned it might have to euthanise the whales if the Canadian government did not provide funding. Canada’s fisheries minister then granted conditional approval for export permits, and the relocation began in July 2026. The first four belugas sent to Shedd, Acadia, Osiris, Sierra and Lillooet, left Marineland on 21 July 2026.
The whales were split between six facilities: Shedd Aquarium, SeaWorld San Antonio, SeaWorld San Diego, Georgia Aquarium in Atlanta, Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut, and Oceanogràfic in València. The last belugas left the park in September 2026. The closure of Marineland itself set the whole operation in motion.
What the Necropsies Found
Shedd reported that the two whales examined first had chronic inflammatory disease in their digestive systems that pre-dated their arrival in Chicago. The aquarium released the preliminary findings on 25 September 2026.
The inflammation was described as significant in Peekachu and severe in Rain, and in both cases was likely present for months or years before the move. Examiners also found foreign objects in the whales’ stomachs, including bird feathers, rocks and small flecks of paint, which the animals could not have swallowed at Shedd.
Shedd said veterinarians found no evidence of a shared infectious disease or a common environmental factor connecting the deaths of Peekachu, Rain and Beethoven. Osiris died later and her necropsy is being assessed separately, with findings not yet published.
Did the Move Itself Kill Them?
The evidence so far points to illness the whales carried with them rather than to the journey alone, but the question is genuinely contested. The foreign objects and the long-standing digestive disease both indicate problems that began at Marineland, not in Chicago.
Critics argue the transfers were rushed. The Whale Sanctuary Project, which campaigns against whale captivity, called the operation reckless and said the animals should not have been shipped anywhere until they had been examined by competent, independent veterinarians.
Shedd’s position is that the whales arrived with problems that could not be fully assessed in advance. The aquarium said each rescued beluga came to Shedd with a distinct life history and health needs that could not be fully understood before their arrival, and that in cases this complex, progress is rarely linear.
What is not yet established is whether the stress of capture, transport and a new habitat worsened conditions the whales already had. Shedd has not published a finding on that, and no independent review has reported publicly.
How Many Belugas Are Still Alive at Shedd?
Seven of the ten Marineland belugas remain alive at Shedd Aquarium. As of 30 September 2026, that is the position: three transferred whales have died, seven are living, and Osiris’s cause of death has not been published.
Shedd has named Secord and Caspian as the two survivors of greatest clinical concern. The aquarium has described the outlook for the remaining whales as day by day and hour by hour, and says the animals are under continuous monitoring.
Not every relocated animal has struggled. Belugas sent to the other five facilities have not been reported as dying in the same numbers, and, as with other captive animals that draw public attention, the survivors’ condition is now being tracked far more closely than before the move.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Many Beluga Whales Have Died at Shedd Aquarium?
Four belugas died at Shedd between 25 August and 21 September 2026. Three were Marineland transfers and one, Beethoven, was a resident of nearly three decades.
Were the Whales Healthy When They Arrived in Chicago?
No. Necropsies on Peekachu and Rain found chronic digestive disease that Shedd says had been developing for months or years before the whales left Marineland.
Where Did the Other Marineland Belugas Go?
They were divided among SeaWorld San Antonio, SeaWorld San Diego, Georgia Aquarium, Mystic Aquarium and Oceanogràfic in València, alongside the ten sent to Shedd.
Why Was Marineland Closed?
Marineland stopped operating in 2024 following years of controversy and animal-welfare allegations, and it could not fund the care of the whales that remained.
Is Shedd Aquarium Under Investigation?
No public investigation into Shedd has been announced. The aquarium is releasing its own necropsy findings, and no independent review of the transfers has reported publicly as of 30 September 2026.
