Jack Ma stepped out of public life in China after criticising financial regulators in a speech on 24 October 2020, days before authorities halted Ant Group’s record stock market listing. He was never charged or reported detained. He holds no formal role at Alibaba or Ant Group today.
Was Jack Ma Ever Arrested or Missing?
No. No Chinese authority has ever announced an arrest, a charge or a detention of Jack Ma, and no government has reported him missing.
The idea took hold in January 2021, when he was absent from the final episode of a television talent show he had created and had not been seen in public for roughly three months. Western coverage at the time framed this as a disappearance. He surfaced later that month in a short video address to rural teachers, and in the years since he has been photographed in Japan, Spain, Thailand, Australia and the Netherlands.
The accurate description is narrower and duller than the rumour. Ma withdrew from public commentary, gave up his controlling position in Ant Group, and spent long stretches abroad. That is a retreat, not a detention.
What Did Jack Ma Say in October 2020?
Speaking at the Bund Summit in Shanghai on 24 October 2020, Ma attacked China’s financial regulators for stifling innovation and said Chinese banks operated with a “pawnshop mentality”.
The audience included regulators, state bankers and senior officials. The timing mattered as much as the content: Ant Group, the fintech company Ma founded and controlled, was twelve days away from a dual listing in Shanghai and Hong Kong.
What the Speech Cost
Within two weeks the listing was dead, and over the following two years Ma’s control of Ant Group was dismantled.
- Early November 2020: the Shanghai Stock Exchange suspended Ant Group’s listing, saying the company might not meet listing or disclosure requirements. The Hong Kong leg fell with it. The offering would have raised more than $34 billion, the largest in the world at that point.
- April 2021: Chinese regulators fined Alibaba $2.8 billion for breaching anti-monopoly rules.
- 7 January 2023: Ant Group announced that its ten major shareholders, Ma among them, would stop voting in concert. Ma’s indirect control of about 53 per cent of the company’s voting rights fell to roughly 6 per cent, leaving no shareholder in sole or joint control.
Ant Group has not returned to the stock market since. The listing has never been revived.
Where He Actually Was, 2021 to 2023
For much of that period Ma was living in Japan, travelling, and teaching rather than hiding.
Reports in late 2022 placed him in Tokyo with his family, with trips to the United States and Israel. In May 2023 he was appointed a visiting professor at Tokyo College, part of the University of Tokyo, where his stated research interest was sustainable agriculture and food production. He gave his first class there in June 2023.
His public statements in these years were almost entirely about agriculture and education, not technology or finance. In June 2023 an Alibaba executive, asked publicly about him, said Ma was alive and happy.
How the Return Happened
Ma’s re-emergence came in stages over two years, from a school visit in his home city to a seat at a meeting chaired by Xi Jinping.
In March 2023 he returned to mainland China and visited a school in Hangzhou funded by Alibaba, appearing as the company announced a restructuring that split it into six business units. In November 2024 he walked Alibaba’s Hangzhou campus, waving to staff and posing for photographs; Alibaba did not comment on the visit.
The decisive moment came on 17 February 2025, when Ma attended a symposium of private entrepreneurs hosted by Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. It was the first such gathering in nearly seven years. Also in the room were Huawei’s Ren Zhengfei, Tencent’s Pony Ma, BYD’s Wang Chuanfu, Xiaomi’s Lei Jun and DeepSeek founder Liang Wenfeng. Ma’s presence was read worldwide as a signal that Beijing’s campaign against its own technology sector had run its course.
Does Jack Ma Run Alibaba or Ant Group Today?
No. He holds no executive or board position at either company, and neither has announced a return to any official role.
Ma resigned as Alibaba’s executive chairman in 2019, having announced the move a year earlier. Alibaba has been led since 2023 by chairman Joe Tsai and chief executive Eddie Wu. At Ant Group, the January 2023 restructuring removed his control outright; the company is chaired by Eric Jing.
What has changed is proximity rather than title. Reporting in 2025 described him as more closely involved with Alibaba’s business than at any point in five years, particularly around its artificial intelligence strategy, while the company declined to confirm any official capacity. He is still widely described as the founder and informal figurehead of the group, which is a different thing from running it.
Where Is Jack Ma Now, as of 26 September 2026?
As of 26 September 2026, Ma is in China, publicly active in a limited way, and attached to no formal position at the companies he founded.
His most recent widely reported appearance was in early June 2026, when he led senior leaders from Alibaba and Ant Group into paddy fields outside Hangzhou to transplant rice seedlings. Those present included Alibaba chief executive Eddie Wu, chief technology officer Wu Zeming, chief scientist Zhou Jingren and Ant Group chairman Eric Jing. An Alibaba executive followed it with an internal post urging hard work and endurance as the company pushed its artificial intelligence plans.
Before that, in November 2025, he visited Ant Group’s Hangzhou campus on the day it launched LingGuang, a multimodal AI assistant. The pattern since 2024 is consistent: unannounced appearances on company ground, no speeches on finance or regulation, and no title.
