Easy Ways to Open Local Group Policy Editor or gpedit.msc on Windows 10

There are a lot of ways that can help you to open the Local Group Policy Editor on your computer. You can perform the steps explained below: 

Way 1: Using Run Command Box

It is one of the easiest ways to open the Local Group Policy Editor. To open this using the Run box, you can follow the steps given below: 

  1. First and foremost, hit the R and Win key both at the same time from the keyboard to invoke the Run Dialog box. 
  2. Afterward, you need to enter “gpedit.msc” in the Run Command box. 
  3. Hit the Enter key to launch the Local Group Policy Editor on Windows 10 (else, you can also tap on the OK button to open it).

If you see that this process has failed to open the Local Group Policy Editor, then you can move on to the further ways described below. 

Way 2: Using Search Bar

It is known to be one of the faster ways through which you can open the gpedit.msc. Here’s how to do this: 

  • First of all, go to the Start menu. Next. type “gpedit.msc” in the search field. 
  • Click on the ‘Edit Group Policy’ option showing as the search result. 
  • Tap on the Yes button from the ‘UAC (User Account Control)’ to open Local Group Policy Editor. 

Way 3: Using Command Prompt

You can also open the gpedit.msc by using the Command Prompt. To do this, you can perform the steps as follows: 

  1. In the beginning, navigate to the Start menu. Afterward, type “command prompt” in the search field and hit the Enter key.
  2. Right-click on the ‘Command Prompt’ option showing as the search result.
  3. Click on the ‘Run as administrator’ option to open the Command Prompt with admin privileges. 
  4. Thereafter, you have to type “gpedit.msc” in the command line. Press the Enter key from the keyboard to run this command. 

Now, you will see that the Local Group Policy Editor has opened. 

Way 4: Using PowerShell

Another method you can perform to launch the Local Group Policy Editor by using the PowerShell. This method is almost similar to the Command Prompt. Here are the steps you can perform to do this: 

  • First, open the Start menu and type “powershell” in the search bar. 
  • Click on the ‘Windows PowerShell’ showing as the search result. 

[Note: You can also open the PowerShell using the Run Command box. Open the Run box, type “powershell”, and click on the OK button]. 

  • Once you open the PowerShell window, type “gpedit.msc” and press the Enter key from the keyboard to invoke the gpedit.msc. 

If you are still not able to open the Local Group Policy Editor, then you can use the Control Panel to open it.    

Way 5: Using Control Panel

Another way that you can apply to launch the Local Group Policy Editor is by using Control Panel. Perform the below steps given below to open the gpedit.msc u: 

  1. First, open the Control Panel by going to the Start menu. 
  2. Under the Control Panel window, navigate to the ‘Administrative Tools’ section.  
  3. Afterward, click twice on the ‘Local Group Policy Editor’ option. 

If this method doesn’t work for you, you can perform the next method stated below. 

Way 6: Using Settings

Another procedure to open the gpedit.msc is via the Settings app. Here are a few steps on how you can apply the steps: 

  • At first, hit the I and Win key simultaneously to open the Settings. 
  • Afterwardward, search for the ‘group policy’ using the search function. 
  • Lastly, click on the ‘Edit Group Policy’ option to open the gpedit.msc on your computer. 

Way 7: Using Cortana

If the Cortana is enabled on the computer, then you can also use this to open the gpedit.msc. Go to the Microphone icon from the taskbar and say “Hey Cortana, Open Group Policy Editor”. 

As a result, it will open the Local Group Policy Editor and you will see a message “Opening Edit group policy” getting displayed on the screen.

Way 8: Using Task Manager

You can also open it using the task Manager. Open the Task Manager by pressing the Esc, Shift, and Ctrl key simultaneously from the keyboard. 

Go to the bottom-left corner of the Task Manager window and click on the ‘More Details’ button. Afterward, go to the File tab and tap on the ‘Run new task’ option. 

It will navigate you to the ‘Create new task’ window. Type “gpedit.msc” in the specific field and hit the Enter key from the keyboard to open the gpedit.msc. 

Additional Guide: Manual Method

If all the above ways fail to open the Local Group Policy Editor, then you can perform the manual process by following the steps mentioned below: 

  1. Right at the beginning, open the Windows File Explorer and go to the “C:\ Windows \System32”.
  2. Next, either you can use the search function from the upper-right corner of the screen or search for the gpedit.msc manually. 
  3. Once you get that, click twice on that to open the Local Group Policy Editor. 
  4. At last, tap on the Yes button from the UAC prompt. 

You can also create a shortcut for the Local Group Policy Editor. It will help you to open it without any hassle. 

To do this, you can right-click on gpedit.msc and choose the ‘Send to’ option. Afterward, select the ‘Desktop (create shortcut)’ option from the list to create a shortcut.
