Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile shut down permanently on 17 April 2026, when Activision took its servers offline. The game had already been pulled from the App Store and Google Play in May 2025, and real-money purchases ended on 19 May 2025. Activision said it never met expectations with mobile-first players.
Is Warzone Mobile Still Playable in 2026?
No. As of 3 September 2026 the game cannot be played at all, whether or not it is still installed on your phone.
Warzone Mobile was an always-online title. Every match, every login and every menu depended on Activision’s servers, so switching them off on 17 April 2026 did not degrade the game. It ended it. An installed copy opens to nothing usable.
Here is what happened to each thing a player might still be holding.
| What you had | Status now |
|---|---|
| The app installed on your device | Cannot connect. There is no offline or single-player mode to fall back on. |
| An Activision account used in the game | Still valid elsewhere in Call of Duty, but no longer accessible through Warzone Mobile. |
| A guest account | No longer accessible after 17 April 2026. |
| Purchased in-game content | Was usable until shutdown. Not refunded and not transferable. |
| Unspent COD Points | Could be spent in-game until shutdown, then became inaccessible. |
| Your rank and progression | Lost with the servers. |
If the app is still on your device, it is only taking up storage, and uninstalling it costs you nothing that has not already been lost.
It is also worth being clear about unofficial downloads. Any file offered as a way to restore or revive Warzone Mobile cannot work, because the servers it would need to reach no longer exist. A battle royale that requires 120 live players in a lobby cannot be run from a copy of the app alone, whatever the source claims.
Why Did Activision Shut Down Warzone Mobile?
Activision closed the game because it never attracted the mobile audience the company expected, despite performing well on other platforms.
The official wording is direct. “This decision was made after careful consideration of various factors, and while we’re proud of the accomplishment in bringing Call of Duty: Warzone to mobile in an authentic way, it unfortunately has not met our expectations with mobile-first players like it has with PC and console audiences,” the company said in its statement on the closure.
The wind-down came in two stages rather than one. Activision announced in May 2025 that seasonal content, gameplay updates, social features and in-app purchases were ending, and the game left both app stores that month. The final server date was confirmed in February 2026, and the servers went dark on 17 April 2026.
In its announcement of that final step, Activision stated that “the servers for Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile will go offline on April 17, 2026, after which the game will no longer be available for play.”
What Did Warzone Mobile Actually Offer?
It offered the real Warzone maps and modes on a phone, with shared progression across Call of Duty, but never cross-play against PC and console players.
The headline content was Verdansk, the original Warzone map, running battle royale matches of up to 120 players. Rebirth Island hosted the faster Resurgence mode at up to 48 players, and a Plunder mode put 84 players in a 15-minute race to collect in-game cash. All of them supported solo, duo, trio and quad squads, and the Gulag return mechanic came across intact.
There was also a full multiplayer offering that many players overlooked, with Domination, Kill Confirmed, Search & Destroy and Team Deathmatch on compact maps including Shipment, Shoot House and Scrapyard.
The connective feature was cross-progression. Signing in with an Activision ID synchronised content across Warzone Mobile, Warzone, Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III and Black Ops 6, so purchases and battle pass progress moved with the player. The game was free to play and supported controllers.
One limit mattered more than it first appeared. Cross-progression was not cross-play. Mobile users were matched only against other mobile users, so Warzone Mobile shared an economy with the console game but never a player base, and it had to hold a mobile audience entirely on its own.
It also took a long time to arrive. Activision announced the project in March 2022 under the codename Project Aurora, ran a closed alpha that May, revealed the name that September and put the game into a limited release in Australia in November 2022. The worldwide launch did not follow until 21 March 2024.
What Went Wrong After a Record-Breaking Launch?
The game’s reputation collapsed on Android within weeks of release, and it never recovered.
Warzone Mobile arrived with more hype than almost any mobile shooter before it. Activision reported more than 50 million pre-registrations by late February 2024, making it the company’s fastest pre-registered mobile game, and it launched worldwide on iOS and Android on 21 March 2024.
Then the platform split appeared. The iOS build ran well, reached the top of the action category in Apple’s store and held a rating around 4.4 stars, with a Metacritic score of 76 out of 100 and an 8 out of 10 review from IGN. The Android build was a different product in practice, and its Google Play rating fell as low as 1.8 stars.
Players on Android reported a consistent set of problems:
- Server connectivity failures and dropped matches
- Unstable and inconsistent frame rates
- Missing textures and animations caused by asset streaming
- Low visual quality compared with the marketing
- Devices overheating during play
The game was built by several studios working together, including Digital Legends Entertainment, Beenox, Solid State Studios and Activision Shanghai. The ambition was parity with the console game. On a large share of Android hardware, that ambition simply did not fit.
Timing worked against it as well. The project was announced in March 2022 but did not reach a worldwide release until March 2024, and the mobile battle royale market had settled long before then. Call of Duty: Mobile had been running since 2019, while PUBG Mobile and Free Fire had spent years building the habits, device compatibility and regional player bases a newcomer would have to break.
That left Warzone Mobile asking players to leave games that ran smoothly on the phones they already owned for one that, on much of the Android market, did not. Active support ended roughly 14 months after the worldwide launch, when Activision announced the service changes in May 2025.
What Happened to COD Points, Purchases and Progress?
Nothing was refunded, and nothing carried over to another game.
Activision disabled real-money purchases on 19 May 2025, almost a year before the servers closed, which gave players an unusually long window to spend what they already held. Its support documentation is explicit that “refunds are not available for previously purchased in-game content or unused COD Points.”
Unspent COD Points could be redeemed on in-game items right up to 17 April 2026. After that date they became inaccessible along with everything else tied to the game. Player progression was not migrated to Call of Duty: Mobile or to Warzone on PC and console.
The long gap between the two dates was the closest thing to compensation Activision offered. Players had 11 months of warning in which anything already bought could still be used and any remaining balance could still be turned into items, even though nothing could be converted back into money.
This is the detail most worth knowing if you are only now discovering the shutdown: the window to recover any value from the account closed on 17 April 2026, and there is no retroactive claims process. Content bought with COD Points inside other Call of Duty titles is unaffected, because it was never tied to the mobile game’s servers.
Why Call of Duty: Mobile Survived and Warzone Mobile Did Not
Call of Duty: Mobile was designed for phones from the beginning, while Warzone Mobile tried to move a console-scale battle royale onto them intact.
That difference in design philosophy shows up in the numbers. Call of Duty: Mobile launched in 2019, passed 250 million downloads and is still receiving seasonal updates in 2026. It runs on modest hardware because it was never asked to reproduce a 150-player Verdansk match at console fidelity.
Warzone Mobile was. Activision’s own summary of the project praises bringing Warzone to mobile “in an authentic way”, and that authenticity was the problem as much as the selling point. It meant high hardware demands and a game that felt compromised on the mid-range Android phones most of the mobile market actually uses.
The tension between the two titles was visible from the start, and readers were asking what Warzone Mobile’s launch would mean for Call of Duty: Mobile well before either question was settled. The answer turned out to be that the older, lighter game outlasted the newer one.
What Can You Play Instead of Warzone Mobile?
Activision directs former players to Call of Duty: Mobile, and the original Warzone is still running on PC and console.
Call of Duty: Mobile is free to play and carries the modes most Warzone Mobile players were there for, including battle royale, multiplayer, Zombies and an extraction mode called DMZ: Recon. It is the only official continuation path Activision offers.
If the appeal was Warzone specifically rather than Warzone on a phone, the standalone Call of Duty: Warzone remains available on PC and console and is unaffected by the mobile shutdown.
Beyond the Call of Duty family, the largest surviving mobile battle royales are PUBG Mobile and Free Fire, both of which remain in active development with regular seasonal updates. Fortnite is also playable on mobile, though how you install it varies by platform and region rather than coming through the usual app store route on every device.
One caution worth stating: Apex Legends Mobile is not an option, having been discontinued years before Warzone Mobile.
