Netflix cancelled The Boroughs on 17 June 2026, four weeks after the series premiered. Weekly viewing had fallen from a peak of 9.5 million views to 2 million, against a budget The Hollywood Reporter put at about $10 million an episode. The eight-episode first season is the only one.

The Numbers Netflix Was Looking At

Viewing peaked in the show’s second week and then lost more than half its audience in a single week.

The Boroughs is an eight-episode supernatural drama created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews, set in a luxury retirement community in the New Mexico desert where residents uncover a subterranean entity and a youth-stealing cult. It premiered on 21 May 2026 and was filmed in Albuquerque and Santa Fe.

Netflix publishes weekly view counts for every title, and the ones it reported for The Boroughs tell a plain story.

WeekViews
18 to 24 May 2026 (part week)5.6 million
25 to 31 May 20269.5 million
1 to 7 June 20263.7 million
8 to 14 June 20262 million

The second week was the high point, taking the series to No. 1 on Netflix’s English-language television chart. Across the four weeks it drew 20.8 million views and 130.5 million viewing hours. The cancellation followed on 17 June, the day after Netflix published the fourth-week figures.

Reviews were not the problem. The season holds a 97 percent critics’ score on Rotten Tomatoes.

What Each Episode Cost

The Hollywood Reporter put the budget at about $10 million an episode, which works out at roughly $80 million for the eight.

Two cost drivers appear in reporting on the decision: the visual effects needed to put a supernatural threat on screen, and the fees commanded by an ensemble of established actors. The cast was led by Alfred Molina, Alfre Woodard, Geena Davis, Denis O’Hare and Clarke Peters.

Netflix has not published an official reason for ending the show.

How the Duffer Brothers’ Paramount Move Fits In

Matt and Ross Duffer executive produced The Boroughs, and their Netflix deal had already expired by the time it was cancelled.

The Duffers, who created Stranger Things, signed a four-year agreement with Paramount in August 2025 through their production banner Upside Down Pictures, which allows them to direct theatrical features. Their Netflix overall deal ended in April 2026, the month before The Boroughs premiered.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the relationship with Netflix had been difficult since the pair left, and that friction fed into the cancellation. A source close to Netflix disputed that account and described the decision as an ordinary business call.

Where The Boroughs Stands Now

There is no second season, no revival elsewhere, and no awards result to reopen the argument.

The series had been built for more. Addiss and Matthews planned a three-season arc, and a writers’ room for season two had already started meeting when the cancellation landed.

The awards push came to nothing as well. Eight cast members were submitted for Emmy consideration, among them Molina, O’Hare, Peters, Davis and Woodard, and the show did not appear among the nominees at the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards on 14 September 2026.

As of 3 October 2026, no platform has picked the series up and no further season has been announced. The last dated development is the soundtrack release on 19 June 2026, two days after the cancellation.

What the Cast Said

The cast called the timing unusual and pushed fans towards Emmy voters rather than a revival campaign.

Geena Davis told The Hollywood Reporter that “the producers, who became our dear, dear friends, were able to tell us before the news came out, and we’re all terribly disappointed”. She added that it is “probably rare for a show to not get picked up and to have it announced that it’s not being picked up while it’s still in the top 10”.

Denis O’Hare posted a video in June 2026 saying he was “really bummed” because “it was such a great show”, and asked Emmy voters to “stick it to Netflix and let them know that they made a mistake”.

Alfred Molina’s position was simpler. “We’ve got a great premise. The sets are all there. I’d love to do more.”
