Why Rick Moranis Stopped Making Movies
He left because he was a widowed father of two and film work meant long stretches away from home.
Moranis married makeup artist Ann Belsky in 1986. She died of breast cancer in February 1991, leaving him to raise their two children in New York on his own.
He kept working for a few more years, then stopped. “I pulled out of making movies in about ’96 or ’97,” he has said. “I’m a single parent, and I just found that it was too difficult to manage raising my kids and doing the traveling involved in making movies.”
His last live-action film was the direct-to-video Honey, We Shrunk Ourselves, released in 1997. He was 44, and the decade behind him held Ghostbusters in 1984, Little Shop of Horrors in 1986, Spaceballs in 1987, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids in 1989 and The Flintstones in 1994.
He has never called it a retirement. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in 2015, he said the move “wasn’t a formal decision” and compared it to anyone changing careers or moving to another city.
What He Actually Did During the Years Away
He never went fully silent: there were voice roles, a comedy record and one commercial.
- 2003 and 2006: He voiced Rutt the moose in Disney’s Brother Bear, then returned for Brother Bear 2.
- 2013: He released a comedy album, My Mother’s Brisket & Other Love Songs.
- September 2020: He appeared on camera with Ryan Reynolds in a Mint Mobile advertisement, reported at the time as his first on-screen appearance in 23 years.
One episode from those years was not of his choosing. On 1 October 2020 Moranis was punched in the head by a stranger while walking on Central Park West near West 70th Street in Manhattan. A man named Marquis Ventura was arrested the following month, later pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and was sentenced to two years in prison.
The Disney Reboot That Never Got Made
Moranis agreed in 2020 to play Wayne Szalinski again in a Honey, I Shrunk the Kids sequel called Shrunk, and that film was never produced.
Disney announced the project with Joe Johnston, who directed the 1989 original, attached to direct, and Josh Gad cast as the grown son of Moranis’s character. It never entered production and no release date has been announced.
Gad has since described how close it came, saying the team was within inches of starting more than once before the pandemic, schedule conflicts and budget problems stopped it each time. Anyone who remembers the 2020 headlines tends to assume this was the comeback. It was not, and the two projects are frequently confused.
What Brought Him Back for Spaceballs: The New One
Mel Brooks and Josh Gad talked him into a sequel to the 1987 original, and he filmed it in late 2025.
Amazon MGM Studios confirmed on 25 September 2025 that the film was in production with Moranis returning as Dark Helmet, and filming wrapped that December. Josh Greenbaum directs from a script by Gad, Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit.
Most of the surviving original cast came with him: Bill Pullman as Lone Starr, Daphne Zuniga as Princess Vespa, George Wyner as Colonel Sandurz, and Brooks as both Yogurt and President Skroob. Josh Gad, Keke Palmer, Lewis Pullman and Anthony Carrigan are new to the series. The story picks up forty years after the events of the first film.
Moranis has discussed the shoot twice in public. At CinemaCon in Las Vegas in April 2026 he told Fandango that “every day felt kind of strange and surreal because so much time had passed,” and said he agreed to the part partly “because it was the only way I could get Josh Gad to stop texting me.”
On 25 July 2026 he walked into Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con in the Dark Helmet costume and drew a standing ovation. “I wasn’t really retired,” he told the room. “I was just negotiating.” Brooks, then 100, sent a video message rather than attending.
