Ellen DeGeneres stopped hosting her daytime talk show in May 2022 and now lives in the English Cotswolds. She moved there with her wife, Portia de Rossi, in November 2024, after Donald Trump’s re-election. On 16 October 2026 she told The Graham Norton Show that she misses television.
Why The Ellen DeGeneres Show Ended in 2022
The show ended because ratings fell after a 2020 workplace controversy and DeGeneres decided she was finished with daytime television.
She announced on 12 May 2021 that the nineteenth season would be the last. The final original episode aired on 26 May 2022, recorded almost a month earlier on 28 April. Jennifer Aniston, who had been the show’s first guest in 2003, returned for it alongside Billie Eilish and Pink.
The series had run since 8 September 2003 and produced more than 3,000 episodes. Clip shows, guest-hosted editions and repeats continued on some stations into September 2022, after DeGeneres herself had gone.
What the 2020 Toxic Workplace Allegations Said
In July 2020 BuzzFeed News published accounts from current and former staff describing intimidation, racism and sexual misconduct on the production, with most of the specific claims aimed at senior producers rather than at DeGeneres.
DeGeneres sent a memo to staff apologising that the show had not lived up to its promise of a respectful workplace, and said she took responsibility for what happened on it. WarnerMedia’s employee relations group then interviewed current and former employees.
In August 2020 executive producers Ed Glavin and Kevin Leman and co-executive producer Jonathan Norman left the show. Leman and Norman denied the sexual misconduct allegations made against them. DeGeneres addressed the controversy on air when the next season began, and the episode became one of the most scrutinised of her career. Daytime television has seen comparable allegations against other hosts in the years since.
Speaking in Cheltenham in July 2025, DeGeneres said she could be “very blunt” but described the coverage of the claims as “clickbait”.
Why Her 2024 Netflix Special Was Billed as Her Last
For Your Approval premiered on Netflix on 24 September 2024 and was presented as her final stand-up special.
It was her second special for the service after Relatable in 2018, and it dealt directly with the collapse of the talk show and her reputation. Joel Gallen directed, with Ben Winston and Fulwell 73 producing alongside DeGeneres and de Rossi.
Reviews were mixed. The relevant point for anyone tracking her career is that the special was framed as an ending rather than a relaunch, and she has released no stand-up hour since.
Where Does Ellen DeGeneres Live Now?
She lives in the Cotswolds, in southern England, with Portia de Rossi.
The couple arrived in Britain in November 2024, landing the day before the US presidential election. “We got here the day before the election and woke up to lots of texts from our friends with crying emojis,” she recalled, adding that the two of them then decided, “We’re staying here.”
The move was not meant to be permanent. They had originally planned to spend three or four months a year at the property, near Cheltenham in Gloucestershire. DeGeneres has since said that “life is just better here”, citing the treatment of animals and the politeness of people, and pointed to the rollback of LGBTQ+ protections in the United States as a reason she was reluctant to return.
She keeps chickens at the house, and horses belonging to de Rossi were flown over from the United States. Her first public appearance in Britain came in July 2025, in conversation with the broadcaster Richard Bacon at the Everyman Theatre in Cheltenham.
Where Is Ellen DeGeneres Now?
As of 18 October 2026, DeGeneres is living in England, has no television show of any kind, and has exactly one confirmed credit in production.
She has become visible again in small, verifiable ways. On 21 September 2026 she was photographed with de Rossi and Meghan Markle at The Three Horseshoes, an eighteenth-century pub near Burford in Oxfordshire, in pictures published by Page Six.
Three and a half weeks later, on 16 October 2026, she appeared on The Graham Norton Show in London, her first substantial British television appearance since the move. That remains the most recent confirmed public development.
Is Ellen DeGeneres Coming Back to Television?
No comeback has been announced, but she has said more than once that she wants one.
On The Graham Norton Show she said, “I’ve nothing really going on and I really miss being on TV,” adding that she missed “laughing with the writers and the audience” and that “I think about doing stuff here”. She joked that it is “pretty easy to get on TV here” and named British formats such as Gogglebox and pottery and sewing competitions.
The appetite is not new. In July 2025 she said she would love to host a talk show in the United Kingdom and admitted she was a little bit bored. In the same period she said she was thinking about her next move “very carefully” and that she did not yet know what it would be.
What has not happened matters as much as what she has said. No broadcaster has commissioned a DeGeneres series, no production company has announced one, and she holds no presenting contract that has been made public.
The One Job She Has Confirmed
DeGeneres is returning as Dory in a new Pixar short set in the Finding Nemo universe.
Deadline reported the project in April 2026, while it was untitled and in early production. Pixar then revealed it at the Annecy animation festival on 26 June 2026 under the title Loving Dory, directed by Lou Hamou-Lhadj and produced by Mary Alice Drumm, with a story in which Dory mistakes a floating plastic bag for a jellyfish. No release date has been announced.
