Aerosmith retired from touring in August 2024 after Steven Tyler’s fractured larynx failed to heal. The band had played just three shows of its Peace Out farewell tour before the injury stopped it on 9 September 2023. In October 2026 they teased two Hollywood Bowl dates, still unconfirmed.

Why Aerosmith Stopped Touring

Aerosmith stopped touring because Steven Tyler’s voice did not recover from an injury he sustained on stage in September 2023.

Tyler damaged his vocal cords during a show at UBS Arena in Elmont, New York, on 9 September 2023. The band announced the injury two days later, on 11 September, and said doctors had ordered at least 30 days of vocal rest. The diagnosis was later revised: in addition to the vocal cord damage, Tyler had fractured his larynx, which required ongoing care.

On 2 August 2024 the band cancelled the tour outright and announced it was retiring from the touring stage. In its statement, Aerosmith said Tyler had “spent months tirelessly working on getting his voice to where it was before his injury” and that the band had “seen him struggling despite having the best medical team by his side.” The conclusion was blunt: “Sadly, it is clear, that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible.”

The band described the decision as “a heartbreaking and difficult, but necessary, decision — as a band of brothers — to retire from the touring stage.”

How Much of the Farewell Tour Actually Happened?

Three concerts. Aerosmith played three shows of Peace Out: The Farewell Tour before Tyler’s injury ended it.

The tour was announced on 1 May 2023 and opened on 2 September 2023 at the Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, with The Black Crowes as the opening act. The third show, at UBS Arena on 9 September, turned out to be the band’s last full concert. Dates were postponed on 11 September 2023, pushed into 2024 on 29 September 2023, and cancelled altogether on 2 August 2024.

Founding drummer Joey Kramer was not on the tour at all. The band said in 2023 that Kramer, while remaining a beloved founding member, had chosen to sit out the dates to focus on his family and health. John Douglas, Aerosmith’s longtime drum technician, played drums in his place.

Did Aerosmith Break Up?

No. Aerosmith retired from touring, but the band has never announced a breakup or a split.

The August 2024 statement was specific about what was ending: the touring stage. It did not say the group was dissolving, and members have since talked publicly about the possibility of playing again in some form. Bassist Tom Hamilton has said that anything further would have to come from Tyler himself. Guitarist Joe Perry has been more downbeat about the practicalities, saying Tyler “just doesn’t want to tour and he can’t tour,” while also saying he would bet there is at least one Aerosmith show left.

That distinction matters for anyone reading older coverage. A touring retirement leaves recording, one-off appearances and benefit shows available, and Aerosmith has used all three since 2024. It is the same pattern as other artists who stepped off the road without stepping away entirely, as Ariana Grande and Colter Wall have each done on different timescales.

Has Steven Tyler Sung in Public Since the Retirement?

Yes. Tyler has performed live several times since the August 2024 announcement, though never a full Aerosmith concert.

In February 2025 he sang at a Janie’s Fund benefit concert at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles, his first performance since the retirement. The set included “Toys in the Attic,” “Sweet Emotion,” “Dream On” with Lainey Wilson and “Walk This Way” with Jessie J. Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton played, and guests included Mick Fleetwood, Nuno Bettencourt, Matt Sorum and Chris Robinson.

In September 2025 Tyler and Joe Perry performed a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne with Yungblud at the MTV Video Music Awards. That collaboration produced a five-song EP, One More Time, credited to Aerosmith and Yungblud and released in November 2025.

Perry gave the clearest read on Tyler’s voice in April 2026, telling Billboard that Tyler “literally had to take a year off before he was able to start stretching his vocal cords” and that “it’s just been in the last six months that Steven’s started to get comfortable with singing.” A frontman rebuilding a damaged voice over years rather than months is not unusual in rock; Jon Bon Jovi went through a comparable surgery and recovery before returning.

What Is Actually Confirmed About the Hollywood Bowl Shows?

Very little. The two dates come from a teaser video, not from a ticketed announcement.

On 5 October 2026 Aerosmith posted a clip on social media showing Tyler on a ladder outside the Hollywood Bowl, placing letters on the venue marquee alongside rock photographer Ross Halfin. The sign read “Aerosmith & Friends” with two dates, 29 October and 1 November. In the clip Tyler asks Halfin for an ampersand and says, “It’s ‘Aerosmith and Friends,’ Ross.”

The caption promised more the following day. The band then pushed the full announcement from 6 October to 7 October, and when the first deadline passed it posted only behind-the-scenes footage from the making of the teaser.

What remains unestablished, as of 6 October 2026: whether these are full Aerosmith concerts or Aerosmith-hosted shows with guest performers, who the “friends” are, and how tickets would be sold. No tickets had gone on sale, and the Hollywood Bowl’s own calendar listed nothing for either date. Several outlets have reported the dates as confirmed shows; the band itself has confirmed neither a lineup nor a ticket on-sale.

Where Aerosmith Stands as of 7 October 2026

As of 7 October 2026, Aerosmith remains retired from touring, has not performed a full concert since 9 September 2023, and has no confirmed, ticketed live date.

The band has not broken up, continues to release occasional recorded music, and its two most prominent members have performed together in public as recently as September 2025. The 29 October and 1 November dates teased at the Hollywood Bowl are the most recent development in the story, and the band had said a fuller announcement would follow on 7 October.
